Oh.......I HATE talking about myself !......I..m just a dropped stitch in the rich tapestry of life.
SOME OF THE FOLLOWING IS POSSIBLY TRUE :
I..ve been around for many years. Next time you..re in a cave, take a look at the prehistoric painting on the wall. See the guy standing to one side staring confusedly at his pointed stick whilst his mates take down the hairy mammoth? Probably me ..
Sometime after electricity was discovered, I found myself playing in a psychedelic rock band called "Strange Oblivium" ( a seamless amalgam of Pink Floyd, Lonnie Donegan and gross musical ineptitude ) We never quite got around to re-naming ourselves " The Lesser of Two Elvis " ...which was a missed opportunity, I feel.
When my limited knowledge of the bassoon led to my missing out on the draft for " An Embarrassment of Richards ", and following a brief flirtation with hard rock in "Ewan Hughes Army" and "Heavy Petting Zoo", I opted for a freewheeling folk/rock ensemble called "Runcible Spoon" whose lunatic tendencies once led to a gig at local mental hospital. Which was not actually all that funny, as it really happened.
I think the Runcibles still hold the record for the most unpaid gigs ever undertaken by one band in a single summer. Then most of them went off to Uni and the dream was over ( or " nightmare " , for those with delicate musical sensibilties ! )
Solo work followed ( where else do you go when no-one wants to play with you ? ) then a haircut, suit and interview later I became a bank employee, got married, got a cheap mortgage and the respectability trap was sprung... which signalled the end of my musical career ...or WAS it ??? ( see www.myspace.com/stevehowlettmusic and decide for yourselves ! )
The rest, as they say, is History ( with a brief spell of Biology which led to the birth of my son, possibly better know to you all as Torrentman/Howler ..see below )
I would LOVE to run a guitar sanctuary for unwanted , unloved guitars !!
And yes, a lot of the people in my top friends are artists, and maybe it is presumptious to call them " friends " , but I..ve met most of them and admire their music, and hope you will click and enjoy them as much as I have. Some of them appeared at The Winelight Club, a little music venture which I was a partner in for a year from July 2006...now I run one of my own called Grapevine which is bigger and better and gives me the freedom to run things my way ! We are trying to bring good, honest, intelligent live music to a supportive and discerning audience, and it seems to be working so far !
