There have always been wonderful poets wandering the halls of Montclair State University. Hayden Green would bring Def Jam poetry to the Students of Montclair every semester. The Normal Review would host poetry readings. However it became increasingly obvious that there was a need for a performance poetry group with all the talent roaming around loosely. Hayden Green helped to turn around the tides and organized weekly poetry slams in February 2005. The winners became Montclair's first dream team slam team Se'mona Camper, Patrick McIntyre, David, Tigga, Leslie McIntosh.
Over the course of two years the loose band of poets became more organized and started meeting weekly and took on the name Speaking Through Silence. Jonathan Ware played an important part in the beginning becoming the first President and under Domonique's Leadership they were officially recognized with the SGA. These writers intend to speak not only for themselves but those who cannot speak. They have gone on to perform at Camden performing Arts high, Rutgers Newark, Arts intervention conference in Rutgers New Brunswick Busch Campus, Kean University and many charity events with Stand and NAACP Montclair Chapter. They not only seek to speak, they seek to change the world around them. SPEAKING THROUGH SILENCE meets EVERY WEDNESDAY 2:30pm in Student Center annex room 205. JOIN US!
