If you thought you’d seen it all when it comes to musical families, then you clearly haven’t heard Freak Morice
With members averaging 13 years of age and the youngest member only 10, Freak Morice is fast emerging as one of Queensland’s most exciting new and young creative units.
For the past two years Freak Morice has been rehearsing, gigging and recording out of their North Brisbane base, driven by a simple desire to make music, together.
Led by singer, guitarist and principal songwriter Kahlia Ferguson (16), the band is not content to follow the time worn covers circuit. This is a band committed to finding its own voice and sound through its own songs.
Alongside Kahlia, the band features the brother-sister combination of lead guitarist Daniel Ferguson (14), drummer Joel (13), bassist Nathan (11), and Shani (10) on keyboards. Not just superb individual players, they also posses the rare talent of hitting and holding some truly impressive five-part harmonies.
Influenced by artists as diverse as the Paramore, Demi Lovato, The Jonas Brothers and John Mayer, the band is driven to not limit themselves to any one genre. They’re on a musical journey that is evolving every day as they grow as performers and songwriters.
To date they’ve written more than two dozen songs – and counting – that show a sense of maturity and talent beyond their years. It’s a talent that has been recognised at a string of competition performances over the past couple of years.
Just weeks after coming together for the first time the band took out second prize at the 2007 Kedron Idol competition – beating out more than a dozen more experienced bands and then went on to win OzMuzic08 three months later. They quickly followed up winning first place in the South East Queensland Regional section of Global Battle of the Bands 2008.
With a win in this year’s Billy Hyde’s Urban Upbeat at the Ekka and the People’s Choice Award at Amp’D Up, 2009 is shaping up to be a defining year for the band.
