(Halifax) - Aaron MacDonald, an up-and-coming singer and songwriter from Mabou, Nova Scotia, released his latest album - John Prine’s Advice - at The Music Room in Halifax on Thursday, March 27. The album offers a catchy, folk-style rock that will set listeners dancing and tapping their feet. Coupled with MacDonald’s voice-to-remember tones and cause-for-pause lyrics, the album is a listeners delight; his performance a sensory experience.
"It’s been a busy few months with me getting things together, recording the new album, planning shows and playing music. I’m really excited about the new album. I have a lot of friends to thank getting this album together and I can’t wait to get out on the road and play these tunes for some folks."
This is the first new album in 5 years for the 31-year-old artist. Long recognized by his Nova Scotian fan base for the unique and raw talent he possesses, this album crystallizes his abilities.
“Aaron is, to say the least, an incredible entertainer,†said Corey Bradbury, Vice President of Events at St. Francis Xavier University, after a recent show. “His lyrical elegance and on-stage presence make his show a date to circle on the calendar.â€
The title, John Prine’s Advice, pays tribute to the influence Prine had on MacDonald’s musical career. Various turns of phrase throughout the album are reminiscent of Prine’s lyrical ability, and the songs have the ability to stand alone as poems in and of themselves. Yet within the songs are lines that, while treating the near and dear important subjects of his own life, have the universal ring of truth and beauty. They are not only singable and memorable, they offer listeners those little moments of transcendence that can be so elusive.
Said MacDonald, “These songs, together, culminate the last couple of years of my life. I hope people can find some connection with them and enjoy the songs the way we enjoy playing them.â€
MacDonald’s lyrics contain a clarity of expression we have come to love in singers like Dave Matthews, Paul Simon and Jack Johnson. His natural gift has enabled him to share the stage with such acts as Blue Rodeo, Gordie Sampson, Ashley MacIsaac, Jimmy Rankin, Great Big Sea and so many others. His shows add the frolic of a 2 a.m. kitchen party. Aaron MacDonald is a voice to remember; his performances are chocolate for the soul.
