Gonna be a mommy!

About Me

I'm a pretty normal girl with somewhat abnormal interests. Firstly, I'm a huge fan of sports in general, whether it's actually playing them or just watching. I'm a native of St. Louis, so I'll bleed Blue until I die. :-) My favorite sport to watch is hockey, and I can't wait to be able to see the Blues play again. I love both playing and watching baseball, and the new Busch Stadium is awesome! And of course I can't forget about football and the Rams. I think of all sports though, I love playing volleyball the most.
I'm also somewhat of a gamer. I love playing videogames, but my two favorite genres are RPGs (I prefer more traditional ones) and survival-horror. The Fatal Frame series is a must-have for people who like their horror served up in a more suggested manner, rather than having things jump out at you. I grew up on games for the most part, I still remember way back in the day when I had a hard time beating Dr. Robotnik the first time I played the original Sonic game. lol I haven't had much time to play games recently, but I have also managed to log in quite a few hours playing the pseudo-MMO Guild Wars. My main character name is Sakura Deepwaters on there, feel free to add me and whisper me if I'm on.
I just recently graduated from the University of West Florida with my B.S. in Marine Biology. Right now I'm looking at graduate schools for at least my M.S. and possibly my doctorate. Once I'm done with school, my primary interest is to get some sort of job conducting research on deep sea invertebrate life, since that is what got me interested in the field in the first place. :-) I would prefer to just work at a laboratory or a research station, but if I have to teach classes at a university in order to do my research, I wouldn't mind.
Finally, I may be a scientist but I'm still religious. I call myself a Pagan right now since that's an umbrella term for my basic beliefs. I'm currently exploring different paths and basically just learning about as much neo-Pagan practices as I can right now. For the record, I grew up in a non-denominational Christian church, and I know an awful lot about the Bible and Christianity in general. My decision to become a pagan was one based off personal beliefs and contradictions too fierce with the hard facts of science. Take the quiz:

My Interests

I'm very interested in different cultures in general, but as of right now the ones I've studied the most are the German and Japanese cultures. I'm somewhat fluent in German, having taken about 8 years of it from middle school to college. I wanted to minor in it, but I moved down to Pensacola before I could get it and they don't offer that. So having language withdrawls for awhile, I decided to begin learning Japanese. Wow is that a completely different language from either English or Deutsch. I only took Nihongo I, but it was very interesting and I had a very good teacher. Since graduating, I've been trying to learn some Japanese on my own (like a lot more kanji characters), but I've found that it's very hard for me to learn on my own.

When I was growing up, I also learned how to play the flute (as well as the piccolo and the bassoon later on) and I still occasionally take it out and see how much of it I can remember. I'm sort of envious of my friends that are music majors, but I was never cut out for that kind of profession, since it's hard for me to add my own interpretations of songs. I either have to go off of what the conductor or the original composer wants. I do hope to go back to playing in front of people though, once I'm done with school and have my career started. I'd like to play in a civic band somewhere in my free time.

The other interest I have is in traveling, although being a poor college student I have never even gotten off of this continent and I've only left this country twice. Places I would like to visit include Germany (as much of it as possible), Kyoto, Japan, England and Ireland, Egpyt, South Africa, and different places in Australia. One of my lifetime goals is to go diving in the Great Barrier Reef, but I think I still need a bit more practice.

I'd like to meet:

Miyavi!! For those who don't know who he is, he's a Japanese solo rock artist who I think is incredibly talented. I'd settle for just seeing him in concert though. This is a picture of him with one of his cats.

Other than that, I'd really like to meet Jon Stewart, the host of the Daily Show.

I think it would be awesome to meet the hosts of either X-Play or Kevin Pereira from Attack of the Show, both found on the G4 Network. I think they'd have a lot in common with me and would just be cool in general to hang out with.

Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb of X-Play

Kevin Pereira

Finally, if we could meet dead people, I'd love to to have a chat with Charles Darwin, since he was absolutely brilliant!

Music:

I love all music, with a few exceptions. Modern day rap (for the most part) and pop really suck ass so I don't listen to that at all. But anything from hardcore rock to classical to ambient music I like. My favorite bands at the moment are the Deftones and JRocker Miyavi. NPR has a program called Echoes that plays the kind of music that most people would fall asleep to, but it's good chill-out music for me and has also led me to discovering a bunch of new artists that I wouldn't have known without that show. Along the same lines, I love pretty much all world music and I'm trying to find as much as possible, from Celtic to Arabic, from Latin to African... Music really is a universal language that doesn't need understandable lyrics to be enjoyed.

Movies:

I'm still a kid at heart, so I love Disney movies almost as much as I did when I was a kid. My favorites would have to be Beauty & the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo, and others that I can't think of right now. I'm also a huge horror fan, especially Asian horror movies, so my favorites there are The Ring, Ringu (1,2 and 0), A Tale of Two Sisters, Ju-On, etc. I also love Shaun of the Dead, which could be classified as a horror or comedy movie I suppose. Other comedies that I like are 50 First Dates, Saved, Harold & Kumar go to White Castle, The Princess Bride, and others.

Television:

American shows: The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Attack of the Show, Deadwood, Rome, and Battlestar Galactica

British shows: Spaced, Black Books, Coupling, Little Britain

Books:

I like classics like A Tale of Two Cities, Jane Eyre, and Emma. Modern books that I love are Tolkien's Middle Earth books, the Harry Potter series, and almost all of Stephen King's books.
