Sounds Like: Ten Years on from its last release in 1998, Poker Flat announces the re-issue of 15 seminal tracks from Steve Bug’s first Label project, ‘Raw Elements.’ Inspired by a sound that really only existed amongst a growing community of talented and visionary producers at the time, the label emphasised the quality and addictiveness of this music, and opened it up to Germany, and in turn, the world.At the same time as promoting the use of tough, raw electronic sounds to create defiant and heady dancefloor burners, the label seamlessly blended elements of warm, deep house vibes that had not previously been heard in such a context. Here was energy, volume and power, but also funk, soul and a true musical message to be found.Taking the listener through the many faces of the catalogue, this compilation celebrates this ethic to the core. Seldom before had so much joy been taken in carefully measuring every ingredient within an arrangement, or molding a collection of sounds to the effect of creating one living, pulsating atmosphere...Highlights include the many corners of Steve Bug’s early production projects, from the genre-slicing ‘Rhodes Flash’ to his super-reduced and addictive ‘All Night’ as Superlova. Notable remixes of some of Bug’s classics also hold their heads proudly, such as Russ Gabriel’s narcotic remix of ‘Honeymoon,’ and Les Rythmes Digitales hi-tech re-rub of ‘Drives Me Up the Wall.’Tougher realms are broached, as both Bug vs Acid Maria and Dexter Moore educate us with their cerebral incantations, whilst on a more rapturous tip, Vincenzo’s musical mastery is clearly confirmed in the forms of ‘Vibrations’ and At Throb’. That’s not to say that every track here doesn’t have a strong identity and a defining place in time and space, and more treasures await for the avid explorer.Representing the dreamiest wonderings to the rushing heights of the Raw Elements sound, this is House Music at a pleasantly superior level, twisting itself around our consciousness and squeezing out negativity, so that only good vibes may remain!
