aloha my name is tom-A-hawk, jr. - a name given to me by a good friend, roommate, and musical co-conspirator at my first rental out of high school when i was 20 years old. i actually added the 'jr.' myself when i started making music. i played an open mike at anodyne coffee shop in minneapolis once and the mc asked me 'is there a tom-A-hawk, Sr.?' ... without missing a beat, i leaned in to the microphone and said 'he's out there somewhere.'
proud to be minneapolis born and bred w/ deep eastern roots, now happy to be located in the middle of the pacific ocean.
my major influences come from the lo-fi alt-pop i cut my indie teeth on in my early 20's. the recordings i have made available here are rough drafts, deliberately hasty garageband approximations of the type of music i want to make, and have been making for almost 20 years. i hope you appreciate my personal, intimate, raw approach and welcome any comments or messages you may have - good or bad - about my music.  [i'm serious - if you have listened to my music here PLEASE add me and/or give me a shout!]
PS - after dreaming [sometimes literally] of being in a minneapolis indie rock band for 20 years, my dream finally came true in the the fall of '07, the magical affair that happened only after i made the decision to move away from minneapolis for good: i played rhythm guitar and sang a bit for a campy uptown punk rock outfit formed through connections i made working at the uptown yWca - thank you hans, darcy, eric, mathias!!! we agreed to call ourselves 'irving south' [the street where we practiced and played our first gig together - at a halloween party where i dressed up like shelley duvall in 'the shining' ... ! check out the photos here !], but in my heart i know our true, real, essential name was a phrase that became the mantra of the season and the inspiration for our best original song -
keep it together minnelli !
that being said i'd also like to mention that i hope my days of playing in a band are not over, and that if you found anything that resonates with you here, and also happen to live in the middle of the pacific, i'd welcome the chance to get together and jam.
xoxo,
-T.
