About Me

My name is Bryn, my DJ alias is BRYNSTAR, and I'm a disc jockey extraordinaire, oh yes, I'm blowing my own funky horn! I still spin vinyl records 90% of the time! I've been a music lover for as long as I can remember. I've been a professional disc jockey for nearly fifteen years, and I still get a serious sense of personal gratification when laying down the FUNK behind the wheels of steel to a crowd of beaming booty-shakin' hedonists ... (house music all night long!) The first record I bought was MJ's "Off The Wall" LP. And I still reckon "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" is one of the greatest dance songs ever composed! I started DJing in student radio in Wellington, New Zealand, co-hosting a popular Friday night party show called Heavy Traffick (1994-96), which quickly lead to my first residency in the infamous Artemis Bar in La Luna nightclub. I moved to Sydney at the end of 1997. My attitude toward DJing is pretty straight-forward: The essence of djing is track selection; becoming truly savvy about the genres and styles of music that you love, knowing instinctively which track will compliment the previous. Smooth beat-mixing is the package, but finesse makes it an art. A good dj is never self-indulgent; a truly great dj is one whose personality and charisma shines through the music. Strong melody and rhythm are paramount. My motto: deep funk for jazzed souls. DJing highlights include: impromptu set at OperaQuattro (Granada, Spain, 2008), Playground Weekender “Club Tropicana” poolside set (2007), Vic’s Disco Tent (Peats Ridge Festival, 2006), Opera Bar “live” alfresco sets (2006-08), Disco Inferno NYE (The Establishment & hemmesphere, 2004-06), Alpha NYE (Reckless Republic, 2005), ARIAs (Mushroom/Frontier) after-party (2005), The White Parties (2004-05), Funk Safari Sunday recoveries (Kinselas, 2003), Voodoo Knights’ Late Sessions (Civic Theatre, 2002), guest set at Mark Farina gig (Wgtn, NZ, 2000) ... and being “funkatized” by JK (Jamiroquai) in Tank’s back bar (Vibes On A Summer’s Day post-gig partying, 2001) ... I also create original music with my brother under the moniker Jaywalkers, c'mon over! www.myspace.com/jaywalkersfunk
