Don Von Tress

About Me

Twice Grammy-nominated songwriter and artist Don Von Tress makes his home in the hills of southern Tennessee, just north of Muscle Shoals Alabama. His musical style is hard to pigeon-hole, being a mix of rock, rythm and blues, folk-rock and pop. He began performing in the 60’s in the Detroit-Toledo area in the same venues as fellow up-starts Bob Seger, Iggy Pop, The MC-5, and Ted Nugent. His band, The Gypsy Blue, was well-known on the Michigan/Ohio scene and in ’68 were heard on regional "underground" radio stations. 1968 also saw Von Tress abducted into the US Army and subsequently sent into combat in VietNam. That experience resulted in, among other things, the inherent sarcasm and sadness that still permeates Don Von’s music. In the 70’s and 80’s Von Tress concentrated on songwriting, and in 1989 he penned the cross-over mega-hit "Achy Breaky Heart."The song generated sales of millions and was nominated as 1992 grammy ’song of the year’ to be beat out by Eric Clapton’s "Tears in Heaven." After seven years of touring with Country-rocker Billy Ray Cyrus, Von Tress is enjoying making records again with the likes of Muscle Shoals legend David Hood and an all-star cast of world-class musicians.
