Born July 21, 1953 in Smithdale, Mississippi, Melvin Williams (the eighth of ten children) began singing at the age of six years old. In 1960, under the guidance of his father (Leon "Pop" Williams) and with the support of his mother (Amanda Williams), The Williams Brothers, was formed. Very early in their career, Melvin, with his outgoing personality and charisma, was seen by most, as the lead singer of the group.
"Holding On", The Williams Brothers' first album was released in 1973, and it proved to be only the first of many successful projects that these men of music would unveil. Over the years, the number of members in the ensemble changed, going from a five-member quintet to a four-member quartet, to a three-member trio. But one thing has held true, lead singer, Melvin Williams has remained a fixture, helping to make The Williams Brothers one of the most revered male groups in the gospel arena.
With perhaps the most recognizable face and voice in the famed gospel group, Melvin Williams is a quadriple threat. He is not only a prolific singer, but also a producer, songwriter and musician (he plays a mean guitar)! Add to all of that that Melvin has also been known to do some stage acting, and you drape yet another layer onto his multifaceted stack of talents.
Over the years, Melvin has ventured away from the group's recordings several times and thrilled his fans with individual projects that further validate his God-given anointing. With his unique raspy vocals, the incomparable Melvin Williams has massaged the ears of music lovers of all ages with solo projects that include:
"Back To The Cross" (1988)
"In Living Color" (1992)
"Never Seen Your Face" (1998)
"Love Like Crazy" (2007)
"Crazy Like Love" (2007)
"Best of Melvin Williams" (2009)
This self-proclaimed country boy's longevity is a testimony that many artists who started out with his humble beginnings cannot echo. He has been divinely favored to share the stage and studio with some of the world's most respected gospel and secular artists, including, Shirley Caesar, James Cleveland, Fred Hammond, The Winans, Gerald Lavert, Walter Hawkins, Mary Mary, Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, Amy Grant, Chaka Khan, Yolanda Adams, Luther Vandross, Vickie Winans, Denise Williams, Mighty Cloud of Joy, Stevie Wonder, Andrae Crouch, Philip Bailey, The Mississippi Mass Choir, Maurice White, BeBe & CeCe Winans, Al Green, Kool and the Gang, Deitrick Haddon, Patti LaBelle, The Hawkins Family, The Clark Sisters, Clifton Davis, Shirley Murdock, Sound of Blackness, Peabo Bryson, James Taylor, and many more.
Along with The Williams Brothers, Melvin has won three coveted Stellar Awards and received six Grammy Award nominations.
He is arguably one of the most dynamic talents to grace the gospel stage. And after all these years....he's still here and going strong!
