Greetings. Welcome to the Studio 713 Music page on MySpace! Your host is Ted Johnson, a "weekend musician" living in Chapel Hill, NC. Currently, I play synthesizer and guitar in Random FX, National Holographic, Groove Stream Attractor, and Hypoxia -- four bands specializing in spacey, improvised music. I also run a home studio (Studio 713) where I record my own compositions and collaborate with other musicians.
The Music. This MySpace page features music by various bands that have recorded at Studio 713 (Random FX, Hypoxia, Johnson and Hendrix) together with a few of my own songs. Click on National Holographic or Groove Stream Attractor to hear music by these two bands.
Additional recordings can be found at the Studio 713 Facebook site.
Studio 713. In 2002, I set up a home studio (Studio 713) to record my own compositions and to provide a place for collaborating with other musicians. The main website ( www.Studio713Music.com ) features music recorded or mixed at Studio 713. You will find zipped mp3 files for download throughout the site, or you can use the handy on-site music player. The main Studio 713 website also provides brief histories of various Chapel Hill bands I have played with since 1985.
Random FX. Two or three times each month, Studio 713 hosts a jam session for a core group of local musicians (Random FX). The wide-ranging music has included space rock, nu jazz, ambient electronica, and industrial noise. Rough mixes of selected jams from 2006, 2007, and 2008 can be played and downloaded at the following five web sites.
Collection 1. Collection 2. Collection 3. Collection 4. Collection 5.
At each address, you'll see a list of 10 song titles under the heading "Audio Files". Each song title is simply the list of musicians + the session date + the song number. (See the collaborations section on the main Studio 713 website for more information about each musician.) Click under the column heading "VBR MP3" to hear a particular song at the highest bit rate.
The following musicians have contributed to the Random FX sessions: Patrick Cross, Ben Davis, Jim Dennis, Bryce Eiman, Pete Gamble, Dave George, Rich Guadagnini, Ted Johnson, JJ Kidder, Marc Medwin, Bongo John Metcalf, Brian Mitchell, Brian Preston, Shaun Sandor, Nic Slaton, Barry Tilton, and Frank Tornoe.
The song "Pilot Wave" by Random FX was featured on the December 15, 2007, broadcast of the Tangerine Dream Radio Program .
National Holographic. Dale Caruso, an award-winning producer, has created two excellent videos honoring the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. Each video has a soundtrack featuring music by National Holographic. You can see the Spitzer video on YouTube . You can view the Chandra video on Dale's MySpace page .
Hypoxia. This recently-released CD contains six experimental improvisations by Jim Dennis, Bryce Eiman, Shaun Sandor, and Ted Johnson. See the Blog section for more information about the members of this group.

The 48-minute CD, Ambient Realms, is a solo album by Ted Johnson consisting of four extended pieces: Ambient Realms (12:32), Spatial Awareness (12:08), Coded Transmissions (11:38), and Surface Tension (12:34). Each composition is an aural collage constructed of manipulated sound samples.
