Malaysian composers involved in the contemporary western or 'art' music discipline have been working under the radar for the past two decades. However, the local contemporary music scene as a phenomenon really started to gain visibility and momentum within Malaysia from 2002 onwards, when Malaysian audiences first heard several works by Malaysian composers, namely Chong Kee Yong's Echoed Dream (2002), Sunetra Fernando's Wayang (2002) and Tazul Izan Tajuddin's Sebuah Tenunan III (2003) at the city's new concert hall. Since then awareness of Malaysian composers has grown in leaps and bounds. For a brief history on Malaysian contemporary music see the Malaysian contemporary music entry in Wikipedia .
The local premieres of new works by Malaysian composers has led to increasing awareness and excitement within the local arts community. In 2008 our first anthology of Malaysian contemporary music was produced and circulated with Off The Edge magazine, and a website for Malaysian composers was born. The website hopes to provide at least a starting point of contact for Malaysian composers and Malaysian new music.Visit our website now and enjoy a fascinating selection of Malaysian and regional contemporary music.
