Kirk Leslie Layne born August 10 1979, husband to Tweann Layne and Father of KirTwuan and Twiara Layne, has a passion for music and this is translated into his playing of the Keyboard, his first love and the Bass Guitar his new found love. Kirk has been involved in music since an early age and played the saxophone while at the Coleridge & Parry Secondary School where he pursued his Secondary education and received the ‘Grade 5’ Royal School of Music Certificate with a distinction. He also holds an Associate Degree in Music from the Barbados Community College (BCC).
For the past thirteen years Kirk has been playing the Keyboard and is currently a member of two local bands, ‘The Miraclettes’ and ‘Instruments of Praise’. Over the years, Kirk has performed locally and internationally with artiste such as Andre Woodvine, Paula Hinds, Myah Daniel, Sister Marshall, Sheldon Hope, Joseph Niles, Toni Norville, Eyan Alleyne and Arturo Tappin. His self taught ability on the Keyboard has also involved him in performances with groups such as, The Barbados Mass Choir and The Plantation Band, just to mention a few.
This young man has also amassed experience and respect in the music fraternity having played for major national events. Between 1997 and 2006, he has performed at the Barbados Gospel Fest, in 2003, 2004 and 2007 was involved in performances at ‘The Barbados Jazz Festival’ and also the local ‘Kool Jazz’ event in 2005 and 2006. In addition to these, he has performed locally at numerous engagements across the island.
Although the keyboard is his primary instrument, Kirk has a second passion – the bass guitar. This passion was the foundation which caused him to enroll at the BCC to further himself in the use of this instrument. It was through this avenue that he made his debut performance as the featured artiste at one of the opening segments of the 2007 “Kool Jazz†series.
Kirk Leslie Layne is presently pursuing studies in the United States of America at ‘The Bass Collective’, with music professionals in their own right like Lincoln Goines, Janek Gwizdala, Steve Smith, Nathaniel Townsley, Frank Gravis, Tony Coniff, Steve Marks, Pat Petrillo, Steve Count, John Davis and Horacio “El Negro†Hernandez. During this period Kirk performed for the internationally acclaimed singer, Patty LaBelle, at the Barbados Hilton hotel, and has had the privilege of being recorded on DVD with the well known bassist ‘Victor Wooten’.
Kirk’s goal in life is to become an international recording artist sharing his knowledge with as many musicians in the world, and to take his musicianship to the highest level, with the help of God, being the very best he can possibly be...
