HISTORY
The event is the brainchild of the Hip Hop pioneer, DJ Disco Wiz and activist, SueLye Guerra. In 2006, it was intended to aid in bridging the gap between spoken word performers and Hip Hop artists, joining them together to form the voice of the people. By the second annual Hip Hop Meets Spoken Wordz, the event proved much greater by answering that voice with over 500 coats collected as donations for the poor. This year, the event has received tremendous support and was a success in gathering the hip hop community and spoken word artists together to cater to the needs of the local community.
OUR VISION
Hip Hop has been an integral part of the people’s movement for decades. Unfortunately, the old school pioneers had not found a connection to the new school, yet they remain joined eternally through the art form. It became specifically important to regain the voice of the people that the art was founded in. This is what prompted us to collaborate with young up in coming artists from the hip hop and spoken word communities. Though the mainstream does not always reflect our needs, we could still hear the voice of the disenfranchised and the muted in the underground circuit. This message needed to be heard and so the event, Hip Hop meets Spoken Wordz was born.
MISSION
With over 36 million Americans living below the poverty line and a staggering 28.2% of the Bronx population being afflicted, we must unite to do something. This is why we chose the Bronx, the birthplace of Hip Hop, to be the prime location for our fundraiser. We coordinate an annual Coat Drive for the local community, collecting non-perishable food items and lightly worn or new clothes as well. This event is easily accessible to artists and patrons alike, while still providing a service to the community that is welcoming us.
ACCOMPLISHMENT
We have managed to make a name for ourselves in the Bronx community producing a successful coat drive at the beginning of this year. It attracted Hip Hop Pioneers such as Grand Master Caz and DJ Toney Tone of the Cold Crush Brothers; legendary rapper and choreographer, L.A. Sunshine; Hip Hop Photographer, Joe Conzo and my co-coordinator / co-facilitator, the First Latino Hip Hop DJ, Dj Disco Wiz. Being a grassroots movement, we have also tapped into the great world of underground talent including names like independent artists T-Weaponz, UMA winner Alvare, Brazilian MC Eli Elfi, the moving Rebel Diaz, the multi-talented Props, Def Poetry guest Tamara Blue, international poet Gabriela Garcia Medina, Immortal Technique, Hasan Salaam, Patty Dukes, Rephstar, Boca Floja, Poison Pen, Aja Monet, La Bruja, Rugged N Raw, Caitlin Meissner, B-Boy Omega, Diabolic, NightWalker, Madd Illz, Am I Am, Abundance Child, Precisescience, Marxman, Ngoma, Barbara La Guerrera, DJ Laylo, DJ Johnny Juice, Lemon, El Grito De Poetas and many many more.
THE FUTURE
After three successful runs in New York City, we have decided to branch out and help other communities in need. We are coordinating the next installments of Hip Hop meets Spoken Wordz for the Spring/Summer of 2008 in L.A, DC, Delaware, and Orlando. We intend on having a Food and Clothing Drive for the local communities collecting non-perishable food items and lightly worn or new clothes. This event will be easily accessible to artists and patrons alike, while still providing a service to the communities that are welcoming us.
Ways that you can help
In order to have a successful charity event, we rely on the generosity of others. This includes the good will of volunteers and sponsors like you that provide donated space for performances and vendors, snacks, beverages, assistance by way of promotion and getting the word out to benefit the community. We would like you to consider working with us to make this Food and Clothing Drive a success. Every bit of assistance will help ameliorate the county’s underprivileged residents and ensure that we can continue to provide this service to the local communities of L.A, DC, Delaware and Orlando Florida. We look forward to working with you to improve this country’s conditions, one city at a time.
