THE BARNES PROJECT“Train up a child in the way that he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.†Proverbs 22:6
That’s what Pastor Benjamin A. Barnes, Sr. did more than thirty years ago when he gave his life to Christ and decided to live a life that was pleasing to Him. Barnes, a gifted musician in his own right, under instruction from God denounced his own gift and in turn God promised to “gift†his children. The Barnes Project is proof beyond a shadow of a doubt that a promise made years ago came to pass.
Not long after giving his life back to God, Pastor Barnes was called by God to preach His word. In late 1976, Barnes who was living with his family of five children and a wife Bettie Wright Barnes in Newark, New Jersey moved back to his home state of North Carolina. Benjamin A. Barnes, Jr., who was barely a year old at the time, now serves as a minister of music at Tree of Life Full Gospel Church founded by Pastor Benjamin A. Barnes, Sr. in 1982. Since its conception, the Tree of Life has served as a spiritual breeding ground where gifts and talents were nurtured and prophecies were fulfilled not only in Pastor Barnes’ children, but also in his grandchildren and no doubt generations to come.
The Barnes Project is a meeting of young spiritual minds with a solid foundation provided by Pastor and First Lady Barnes, the nucleus of the family. Their goal is to reach souls and change lives by spreading an “old†message in a new way. The Barnes Project has been blessed with the ability to create new and innovative music, produce as well as write.
Vocally, The Barnes Project consists of the current Praise Team of Tree of Life Full Gospel Church. Brandon Allman Barnes is an All-American running back with the voice of a baritone angel. He is also a grandson of Pastor Benjamin A. Barnes, Sr.. Benaiah is the “baby boy†or youngest son and sixth child of Pastor Barnes. He has been singing since the age of two, wrote his first song at the age of nine and presently serves as the group’s writer, though others are waiting in the wings. Last, but not least is Bre (Brittany), Pastor Barnes baby girl and seventh child. Like her brothers and sisters before her, she displayed her musical gift at an early age, HARMONIZING un-coached at the age of three. She is an awesome vocal producer and sings lead, as do Benaiah and Brandon.God has truly put his stamp of approval on the Barnes family and blessed The Barnes Project to not only do what they love by singing and playing music, but to be used by God to reach souls and spread His love. The Barnes Project is genuinely concerned by the state of the world, especially its youth, which is the future. They are not moved by worldly wealth or personal gain. They stand firmly upon the foundation laid by their parents and particularly two scriptures:1) Mark 8:36 “For what does it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?â€
2) Proverbs 11:30 “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.â€The latter scripture is obviously the origin of the name of Pastor Benjamin A. Barnes’ church. The Tree of Life Full Gospel Church as well as The Barnes Project continues to lift up the name of Jesus and live up to the name of the church by winning souls for Christ. They solicit the prayers of saints and likewise to aid them in their mission of shedding God’s light in a dark world.

Since The Barnes Project is a family group comprised of talented artists in their own right, they've had the opportunity to perform at many functions and events as both solo artists as well as combined. Benaiah, who started out mimicking his older sister Belinda, has performed on many occasions at the Apollo Theater in New York. He's participated competively in local talent shows since the age of 10. Benaiah is also a gifted actor starring in several original stage plays such as "That Long Tobacco Road" for which he got a raving review in the News and Observer for his potrayal of "Boojack."Brittany has also competed in local talent competitions and has appeared on the local gospel music program "Spiritual Awakening" taped in Raleigh, NC. She has appeared as both a solo artist and with Benaiah and other singers. Britttany along with Benaiah was a featured singer of the National Anthem for The Mudcats, a semi-professional baseball team in Zebulon, NC.Though Brandon did not start singing "out" until a few years ago, he is growing by leaps and bounds with the guidance of his aunt and uncle (Bre and Benaiah). Brandon is proud to be a part of a musical legacy and heritage such as the Barnes Family, and even though he is a highly sought after football player who disappointed schools such as Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, and the University of Florida when he accepted a full scholarship to North Carolina State University and seems to be on the fast track to a successful career in the sports world, working on this project ("The Blessing") has caused Brandon's love, passion, and appreciation for music to grow beyond measure. And he has had his own experience rocking the mic at a highschool talent show with a band put together that included The Barnes Project's percussionists and Brandon's brothers Andrew and Jairod called "Spontaneous."Though one or two of the faces may change, The Barnes Project and the spirit of the Barnes Family remains the same. They love God, they love eachother, and they will continue to sing and lift up the name of Jesus FOREVER!!!!
