My name is Misti. I have been in the Air Force for four years. Before that, I was born in Tennessee and raised in Ohio. I have two brothers, a mother, a soon-to-be stepfather, a father, a stepmother, two grandmothers and way too many cousins to count, and I love 'em all. I joined the Air Force a few months after graduating from Cuyahoga Falls High School in Ohio. I spent the next year in Texas, Arizona, and Florida. Of the three, I had the best time in Florida, where I married the boyfriend I had met in Arizona. The beaches of Pensacola, FL are absolutely beautiful, too, and I'm sad that they've had such a tough time there this last year.
For the past two years I have lived in Misawa, Japan, on the AF base there, with my husband. Our daughter, Aislinn, was born there in 2004. She will be celebrating her second birthday next month, and the time has certainly flown by for me!
The best part about being in Japan, besides having a baby, was getting to experience the culture! We went to see cherry blossom festivals (I swear it's one of the most beautiful things in the world), shopped in little Japanese shops throughout Japan, and stayed in a Japanese hotel in Tokyo once. Some advice if you ever have to travel through Tokyo's Nerita International Airport: wear REALLY comfortable shoes! We walked thirty minutes to get to our gate from the security point both times we flew out of there (I think it was closer to 45 the second time), and we were just exhausted! Also, for travelers, travel light if you can. If you have an infant or toddler and can't, my sympathies.
We're in Anchorage, Alaska now, and we love it. Yes, Alaska is really cold, but it's also incredibly beautiful! It took me a little while to get used to the mountains--they're so close here! But now I absolutely love it, and I can see why a good half of the Air Force is usually dying to come here--well, to Anchorage, anyway, not Fairbanks. That's a little too far north for me, thanks all the same.
You know, I joined the Air Force to travel, and I have, but I've only traveled to cold places so far. (Misawa's on the northern tip of Honshu, Japan's main island, and don't ever let anyone tell you that it doesn't snow in Japan! Brrr....) Just once, I hope we get to go somewhere warm.
I'm huge on books and writing, and I teach a class on how to make websites. I want to do web design professionally, but right now I work with computers for the Air Force, so that's pretty cool. I am also trying to start up a writing career. I've got most of a fantasy short story written, and I plan to start sending it out to magazines and anthologies soon to see if I can get someone to publish it. Well, we'll see.
