3DCranesAfter doing my "mandatory" 1001 origami cranes for my wedding in 2002, I swore I would never fold another crane again! But by 2004, I still had ideas for crane designs floating through my head, and since no one I knew would be getting married any time soon (or so I thought), I started this business. Little did I know that getting those first ideas out would open the way for more to come, many that have nothing to do with the 1001 cranes. For those who are not familiar with the tradition, it began with Japanese immigrants to Hawaii, who believed in "tsuru wa sennen" or "the crane lives for a thousand years." Since cranes were also believed to mate for life, they became a perfect symbol for marriage. The folding of a thousand cranes was meant to teach a bride the "patience" she would need to survive married life . . . and Japanese Americans in Hawaii added the "extra" one for good luck. Originally, these cranes were hung from branches or mobiles for display at the wedding reception, later, people began creating pictures out of the cranes. Not all of my work is meant to conform to this tradition. For one thing, I prefer to work in 3D. Also, many of my pieces are meant to be enjoyed for the pure appearance of it, not as simply a number of cranes to be counted towards someone's 1001. But everything that I make is made from cranes -- it's the only kind of origami I know how to fold.
