Stephen McCarthy has always been heavily influenced by Tony Bennett, Chet Baker and Bobby Darin, and while he has his own unique sound these influences may explain why he is becoming known as one of the
"new originals".
Stephen was born and raised in South Wales but now lives in the small village of Farncombe in Surrey. He studied in London from 1992 to 1995 and since graduating has toured extensively in the UK as well as working in London. Ranging from Trios to Big Band Stephen has enjoyed performing with a large number of musicians in a wide range of venues.
"McCarthy grooves, swings, swoops, caresses and attacks each song
with a profligate use of talents other singers simply can't approach"
- Richard Niles [BBC]
"Awesome singing" - Simon Price [Metro London]
"If you are a fan of vocal jazz you should find plenty to enjoy on this album"
- Ian Mann [24dash.com]
Stephen's first solo album release " Call Me Irresponsible " was recorded at Nucool Studios during January 2006 and released on 20th March. In its first week
it charted at Number 3 on

Penny Lane
Stephen recorded a track for the American film company UGN's picture "Phoenix". Written by composer Steve Hill and lyricist Elliott McDow the song is called
You And Nothing More and was recorded at Nucool Studios, London on 12th September 2006.
The two web-exclusive tracks on the player are
Only Trafficand
Birth Of The Blues.
Only Traffic was written by Dave Tamkin and recorded at one of Stephen's demo sessions in August 2006. Steve Hill, who wrote the arrangements for the
" Call Me Irresponsible " album, once again worked his magic on this track and changed it from a high-energy rock song to a slow mournful jazz ballad. Dave gave Stephen permission to explore two of his songs, the other being
Bring Me Back which was featured on here in 2006.
The second song,
Birth Of The Blues, was recorded for the " Call Me Irresponsible " album, but was cut during final mixing.
Enjoy!
