About Me
A 4 year old learns to play “Proud Mary†on a baritone Ukulele. At the age of 5 he performs for his kindergarten class. It all seemed natural for me. Ever since I could remember music has been an essential part of the true me. The me that only can be experienced when I’m in rhythm. Touching people with music is the most sensible purpose I could ever imagine. My Father introduced me to chords and the blues scale at the age of 10. I would spend hours listening to Aretha, Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, George Benson, Harry Belafonte and Stevie Wonder. Albums that I would climb the shelves in my basement to reach and put on. The core influences to my musical and in some ways philosophical foundation. I would later learn songs off the radio to play for friends at high School social gatherings. The more current the better. My ear developed quickly and my ability to pick up musical structure became strong and this form of using music to socialize became my calling card.I soon learned that the spontaneous creativity in blues and jazz could service my growing need to express myself. A formed a jazz Quartet in 11th grade called “Moment’s Notice†named after the John Coltrane classic. While in High School the band gigged and participated in many jazz band competitions. Most of the time being the only group on our age bracket.I was accepted to the university of Miami in Florida in 1986. 2 years in that program really kicked my ass but came away from it with a more developed ability to learn and understanding of professional music language. I soon landed a gig with Motown recording artist Stacey Lattisaw. I was 22 and touring the US on the bill with many of my music idles at the time. Then after a short production gig in Barbados I moved to New York City in 1991 and discovered the power of music and the arts in Community service. I became the Music Director for the CityKids Repertory Company. 8 years of hard work with them provided me with 2 lifetimes of experiences that proved to be one of the best spiritual experiences I could have ever imagined. The repertory gained much acclaim appearing in Carnegie Hall, the Paramount theater in Madison Square Garden, the Presidential summit in Philadelphia, Pa and President Bill Clinton’s 50th birthday party at Radio City Music Hall. My work at the organization stepped up to a level of creativity both musically and dramatically. We then conceptualized and created show for Nickelodeon, ABC, CBS, and the Henson’s. I have a Catalog of over 20 compositions registered with ASCAP. Years with CityKids introduced me to celebrities on a professional music and creative level such as Herbie Hancock, Niles Rodgers, Michael Bolton, Roger Daultry, Bruce Willis, Phoebe Snow, Quincy Jones, Robert Dinero and many others that support the use of the arts to enhance young peoples leadership skills in order to positively affect the world.Following my experience at CityKids hard core gigging on the New York scene landed me in Europe with Guru’s Jazzmatazz. From there I worked with the likes of Be Be Winans, Stephanie Mills, usher, Malik Yoba, Bobby Humphries, Common, Omar, India Irie and others. Working with young people through music will always be a part of my life. Teaching Piano, Guitar and Vocal technique between tours has been rewarding and after years of supporting others in their musical vision, I am now on the path of self-realization of my own power as a singer songwriter. My experience is now paying off in a way that empowers my ability to speak more fluently through music with far less effort. With the birth of my son I look forward to the road ahead and his influence on my musical expression.
