Avocation; music. Growing up listening to the blues in Chicago, the modal music of the east first made an impression on me as a teenager hitchiking across the sahara. A project in Nashville lead me to rediscover American roots music which naturally leads to celtic traditions and if one digs a little deeper exploring one's heritage you find a world of folk traditions all across Europe leading back thru the Balkans and klezmer to the Ottoman empire and beyond to Persia and the Indian subcontinent. And then there is the uniquely American invention, jazz. So one lifetime seems a little short to explore all the influences that might interest one.
