jacaJAH
This Melbourne group, currently of indeterminate structure and membership but whose core is Kenyan singer Abdul Mahazi and production team Vile Vortices, aims to straddle various sonic frontiers rooted in musics from the continent of Africa: the pre-blues vocal chants of the voodoo combos; Afrobeat's reclamation of a funk and r'n'b polyrhythmic sensibility itself derived from African-American folk memory; the deep psychedelic tribalism of Sun Ra and Miles Davis' 70s outfits. As with those last two illustrious forebears, jacaJAH's music further aims to blur the lines between originary artifact and influence: a parallel Fourth World panAfricanism is conjured with bluesy high-life guitar lines and dub echo space. This is the result of a group dynamic produced by the interface of an African lead singer with born and bred Australians: a genuine traditional voice supported by sympathetic musicians/production team whose conception of the birth place of our common genetic origins can only ever be an imaginary construct. Somewhere in the cracks they meet and sometimes magic happens. JAH bless!
