Millennium Queen Revolutionizing the Hip Hop Scene by Kim Muhammad Native Denverite, Najiah, aims to make her mark in Hip Hop with newly released CD "Putin It Down," on independent label HumpBack Productions (HBP). The label is a family owned and operated entity in which various family members run. Najiah was raised listening to legends like Johnny Guitar Watson, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan and has been involved with music all her life since her mother also sang and was a violinist.
Currently, she is in the midst of her year long Millennium Queen tour to promote her album which was officially released Nov. 27. The tour will take her coast to coast with stops in cities from Los Angeles to New York. Putting her album has been a four- year labor of love and perseverance. Her first single received air play in Jackson, Mississippi where she resided a short time before returning to the Mile High City in 2003. "Puttin It Down," an up tempo, dance number, gained her recognition down South from hip hop fans and even members of the city council.
She also has received offers to join major labels but has opted to do things her own way. "I felt if I was interesting enough for a major label to have me sign as an artist then I was good enough to do something on my own," she said. Doing things her own way allows her to control her image and publicity which is important to her in a genre known for show-casing women as sexual objects. Although she does not preach in her songs, she does strive to put out positive-yet savvy messages that youth and adults can not only dance to, but take to heart and act on. [My CD] has some real life material like one song is about a man :Trying to Creep," and I let him know I don't get down like that.
It is a respect for marriage because a lot of songs have no respect for [it]," she said. The multi-talented rapper is also a model, actress, songwriter and producer and plans to make her mark in those arenas as well. She recently signed on with an acting agency, is working on a few film scripts and also promotes HumpBack's HB601, clothing line. Her next single "Black Snow" is soon to be released nationwide following a two-week promotion aired on Black E n t e r t a i n m e n t Television and videos slated to run on local stations. HBP will also continue local CD distribution through outlets like Sam Goody, Record Exchange and others.
[HBP is] taking it one step at a time because [we are] a rising record label," Najiah said, adding that the family run company, in addition to their Denver home base, also has locations in Mississippi, California and coming to Missouri. Fan Mail:
[email protected] Najiah Millennium Queen From the Mississippi Delta To Denver By D Tha Man This Sexy Sensational Majestic Exotic Hottie, Born in The Mile High City in The Sky is on her way to the Top of a new music genre.
Erotica Hip-Hop! A former Shot Gun Willies Dream Girl, Soft porn scarlet has a mic in her hand and is making her way through the country soon to pop charts. Ladies and gentlemen, the queen has arrived. Najiah, who uses her real first name the same as Brandy and Aaliyah, was born in D-Town and raised in the muddy waters of Mississippi. This beautiful and sultry lady of the millennium has a decidedly different flavor as evidenced in her debut album, Puttin It Down, a mix of spoken word and rap encased in an R&B influence.
Think Missy Elliot meets Ciara, the current single "12Step" notwithstanding. With tracks that affect the lover in you ("Trying to Creep") and the skill seeker (the single,"3The Hard Way"), this female poet is letting people know she is a performer, and "aint just faking the funk". Covering assorted topics with earnestness and sincerity, Najiah Millennium Queen simultaneously seduces and surprises her listeners. In addition, several interludes speak to the human condition ("Never Forget" and Mighty Women") because, she says, "I love people, that’s why I do music. It’s healing." She added, "In this world of chaos there needs to be an angelic voice, and I am that voice." Najiah's mother was a singer who also played violin.
At a young age, Najiah decided her path in this life. "When I was four, I told my family I was going to be a star," she recalled. Her grandmother, always a staunch supporter, made sure the young diva's parents encouraged and supported her along the way. Najiah, having written lyrics since she was 12, penned the bulk of Puttin It Down. She also wrote and programmed the music, with some help from her brother, producer and CEO Ray T.K. the celebrated producer Rico Wade helped out on a couple of songs. This Mile High country girl has been influenced by a wide range of music, including jazz and classical. "I even like opera," she said. But it was her generation's love of Hip-Hop and the new resurgence of classical Black soul that was the most instrumental in her debut project.
Najiah, who is more spiritual than religious, also found inspiration for this record outside of the studio. "Gods get up and make things happen; dead men lie around and wait for things to happen to them." "Before I do anything," she noted, "I pray. Then I get up and go do. Whatever comes up [from there] I deal with it." Najiah, along with her brother and other family members, started their own entertainment company. Just a little more than a year ago, the willful and determined performer was putting together her production company and studio in Colorado, when she got a call from her brother. He had the same idea and called her up to let her know what he was doing "back home." After that call, she says, "I sold my house, and moved back to Mississippi, and invested my time and money in the family business... we put the album together soon afterwards." HumpBack Productions, also referred to as HB601, is in the midst of a national campaign to get their music and video into all major markets. "Gods get up and make things happen," said the confident performer; dead men lie around and wait for things to happen to them." And you better believe that Najiah knows how to make things happen. The family has opened offices in Louisiana, Kansas City, and Jackson Tennessee, as well as in Denver and Mississippi.
In addition to completing Najiah's album, the company is working on a film and the first single by her sister. They are putting together a clothing line with everything from hats to undergarments and coats to nighties, for men and women. In addition, Najiah has appeared on stage alongside varied industry notables, including Irv Gotti and The Inc. superstars Ja Rule, and seminal stars Syleena Johnson, Stephanie Mills, Adina Howard, Terry Troutman, Midnight Star, Lighter Shade of Brown, Spice1, Pubic Enemy, and Bizzy Bone. "This is my career," Najiah stated matter-of-factly. "And I'm in it for the long haul." With the foundation she's laid, and her talent and drive, you can best believe this is no idle statement.
So take a moment to get to know your new royalty. All hail the queen.
