This project was born of nostalgia. I'm not talking about your generic "soviet nostalgia", which is a disgusting and overused cliche, but we had that unique sort of idealism and naivete that films of our childhood possessed in mind when we decided to make a gimmick hip-hop album.
Both of us are old enough to claim that we'd spent our childhoods surrounded by soviet media, and some of the fondest memories from that time are of sci-fi films of that era. They were not like something you can see on MST3K: most of them were low-budget, and god knows enough of them were pretty bad, but all of them had this uplifting, inspiring quality, their mission being to portray a utopian society where human spirit is free from greed and vanity, and hunger for knowledge, exploration, is all that drives them (communism, basically)
Therefore originally "The Newcomers" were supposed to be all about lighthearted, sci-fi-inspired fun and would imitate the spirit of those films. However, modern Russia we live in, being a combination of all the worst features of soviet and capitalist societies, doesnt exactly inspire idealism, so bitterness and sarcasm have infiltrated the lyrics over time. Currently, mood on most of the album is pretty gloomy.
Aesopian description of modern society through futuristic storytelling might not appeal to everyone, but even if you choose to ignore all that crap... hey, you still have two guys making songs about black holes and android chicks, sampling French pop, using nerdy references and generally creating music the way they want to, with enthusiasm to make up for the lack of hip-hop skills. Hey, this production style used to be cool in the 80's!
The album is currently at the late mixing stage; the whole thing is about to be unleashed upon the world.
