About Me

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Luis Alberto Cuevas Olmedo, a.k.a. Beto Cuevas, was born in Santiago, Chile and joined La Ley in 1988, a year after it was formed. Though born in Chile, Beto Cuevas spent the majority of his first 20 years in Canada and Venezuela, an experience that left him fluent in English, Spanish and French.
During a 1988 trip to Santiago, Beto met La Ley's drummer, Mauricio Claveria. The drummer invited Beto to join the band, which had just seen the departure of two of its founding members. Beto made his singing debut on the band's first full-length album, "Desiertos," quickly becoming the voice of La Ley. Shortly thereafter La Ley released its first big-label album, "Doble Opuesto," which featured a cover of the Rolling Stones "Angie," a huge hit that propelled the band to widespread notoriety.
Since then, Beto Cuevas has been one of the main creative forces behind the band, writing and singing most of the tracks. Many band observers credit his early years in North America as the greatest influence in La Ley's sound, which is unique among Chilean and Latin American bands. Less Latin and more power pop/rock, La Ley writes lyrics in English, Spanish, and occasionally French, and comfortably makes rotations on U.S. alternative rock radio stations.
Beto Cuevas is currently on hiatus from La Ley and is working on new material for an upcoming solo album. Beto has also been working on some small musical projects, including the song "Loud" which is a collaboration with Masters At Work ("Little Louie" Vega & Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez) and will be released in 2006 on the MAW upcoming album. He also wrote a new version of "Mentira," a single from the La Ley MTV Unplugged, that is featured on the soundtrack for the movie "La Mujer de Mi Hermano."
Other musical projects include a collaboration with Chilean band Los Prisioneros on their latest album "Manzana" where Beto stepped in to play synthesizers, guitars and vocals on the songs: "Insatisfaccion", a reversion of the Rolling Stones classic "Can't Get No (Satisfaction)", and "Eres Mi Hogar".
Your best bet for catching Beto Cuevas these days though, is to head on to the movie theatres. In "La Mujer de Mi Hermano" Beto plays the role of an Opus Dei priest. He also appears in the soon-to-be-released film "Borderland" by director Zev Berman where Beto plays a satanic cult leader. Now, Beto is getting ready to work on his first starring role in "Una Vez Mas" from director Ricardo DeMontreuil due for release in 2007, where he plays a philosophy professor.
Work on his solo album is still at the beginning stages and recording won't begin until late in 2006.
