SOME OBSERVATION FROM A LIFE IN TECHNICAL THEATERThe natural condition of the theater business is one of insurmoutable obstacles on the road to disaster. Strangely enough, it all turns out well. It is a mystery from "shakespeare in love".Every production is a journey through time with the schedule your road map. And opening night your destination.Do not be overwhelmed by the enormity of your job. Large projects are composed of individual tasks. Accomplish the details, and the big picture wil be completed.The best time for change is when the project is still fluid. It is easier to change a drawing than a flat.Budget carefully. A project underestimated is twice cursed: one for too much money being spent, two because you will still have to do the work.The 3 components to scenery production: info, carpenters, and materials. It is the main task of the TD get them all in the same room.Information is power. Project-define in detail, delegate details, do research first. Make a list when in doubt.The groundplan never lies.Do not be afraid to make the first cut. Mistakes can be corrected. Hesitation has no cure.What goes around, comes around.Never give up. Make decisions for next week. Don't think about the past. Picture yourself at opening night with a few drinks in your hand.
