Carina Albuquerque is establishing herself as a very versatile cellist, performing regularly in solo and chamber music recitals in important venues in England (Barbican Hall, Wigmore Hall, St. John’s Smith Square), Holland (Vredenburg Muzikcentrum), Portugal, Italy, France and Greece. In July 2007 she had her concerto debut with ‘Orquestra do Norte’ (Portugal), performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto.Carina has been awarded several prices: first prize in the North London Music Festival, second prize in RDP Competition (Portugal), Wolfson Foundation Award, second prizes in the International Competition Julio Cardona and in the Parnaso Competition (Portugal).Carina began her musical education in her home town and was later admitted to the Professional Artistic School of Vale do Ave (Artave), where she began her cello studies with Professor Jaroslav Mikus. In 1999 Carina was admitted to the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (Holland), where she studied for two years with Professor Elias Arizcuren. In September 2001 Carina moved to London where she studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under the guidance of Professor Stefan Popov, obtaining the BMus in 2004, the MMus in 2005, the PGDip in 2006 with Distinction and the Master’s in Music Performance – Guildhall Artist (Chamber Music) in 2007. She has been awarded a Fellowship from the GSMD for the academic year 2007/08. During the course of her studies Carina has kindly been supported by the Gulbenkian Foundation, the Leverhulme Trust and the Vasconcellos Award.An enthusiast chamber musician, Carina is a member of the 'Da Capo Quartet' since 2005. With this ensemble she recorded for BBC and Southbank Centre, won the first prizes in the 'Gerald Heller & Rosemary Rappaport Intercollegiate String Quartet Prize' (2006) and in the 'Chartered Surveyors String Quartet Competition' (2005). They also participated in the 'Paxos International Music Festival' (Greece), 'Elizabeth Maconchy Festival', 'Ensembles Festival' (GSMD) and 'London String Quartet Symposium', where they worked with members of the most distinguished string quartets.
Carina is also a member of the cello octet 'Lusocello Ensemble' and was a member of the Vianna da Motta Piano Trio, to whom was awarded a special prize at the ‘RDP Competition’ and with whom she recorded a CD for the 'Centro Atlantico' label.
Since September 2006 she is a member of 'Orquestra do Norte'.
