Alecto are a post rock band from the Isle of Lewis off the north west coast of Scotland. They began 6 years ago in the first songs of their bassist Allan, whos' only knowledge of music came from listening to Mercury Rev and Jeff Buckley. Lacking a decent singing voice he just wrote instrumental pieces and assumed he'd pick it up at some point.
5 years later Allan decided to ask if he could record a song for a compilation of local bands. The answer was yes, based presumably quite heavily on the novelty of having a post rock band on the album. Lacking any common sense he chose a multi part, 10 minute (at the time, later trimmed to a lean 8) song with an end riff that wasn't made for keeping in time with. Asking DC the Dragging the Lake drummer for help they set about practicing it two weeks before recording began.
Following the success of the recording (with much nodding and shouting of "now!" to aid the process) Ally and Ivor were brought in to try to play the whole shebang live, this fell apart when Allan ran away to the other end of the country a week later.
Having returned to the island the band resumed with Kenny Solo (soon to be Kenny Chord) in place of Ivor. In this time they managed to record two songs and play two gigs before Allan disappeared again.
