The Dark Beaks

About Me

The Dark Beaks come from Dunedin, New Zealand. Dunedin is on the south east corner of the South Island of New Zealand, elbowing it’s way into the sea where the south west Pacific Ocean and the Southern Ocean meet. Next stop, Antarctica.Dunedin is known for producing alternative guitar bands and musicians. The Dark Beaks grew from this Dunedin tradition; their sound shaped by this southern University city's DIY attitude, indifference to musical trends and the isolation of living on the edge of the world. They recorded their album "Spill Your Heart" themselves in a large basement room on simple (and some home-built) gear and self-released it to an appreciative audience of Kiwi jangle-pop lovers around the world: ____________________________________________________________ _____ "It's been too long since I've heard something this inspired come out of New Zealand so get while the gettings good." (Dagger, USA) ____________________________________________________________ _____ "There’s something about the music of Dunedin, New Zealand’s the Dark Beaks that evokes the lushness of their home island (just like the ol’ Flying Nun bands)…enough inventive, tuneful songs to make it a must-have.” (Autopia Music, USA, Albums of the Year for 2006) ____________________________________________________________ _____ “Proudly carrying the flag of Dunedin, New Zealand guitar pop …delicious guitar tone …a warm and good-natured effort” – (Copacetic Zine, USA) ____________________________________________________________ _____ “Warm, dark bubbling alt-guitar rocking…The Dark Beaks like to crowd their mixes with warm, dark brown, almost Van Morrison tones and then fast forward them to late Beatle territory, but in a cool way.” (Unpeeled Magazine, UK) ____________________________________________________________ _____ "A mad plate, with which there is new to discover again and again. Clearly rather Pop as rock. In strange kind dreams and unreal. Beautiful." (Guitars Galore, Germany, Album of the Month, transl.). ____________________________________________________________ _____ “It's a gem of a record, recalling the hey-day of Flying Nun jangle pop.” Blink (A Low Hum) ____________________________________________________________ _____ "Guitar-pop trio The Dark Beaks have delivered the surprise pick of the bunch” **** (The Otago Daily Times) ____________________________________________________________ _____ "Reminiscent of early Flying Nun... a welcome new addition to the rich catalogue of sounds that have emanated from Dunedin's frosty corridors." (The Southland Times) ____________________________________________________________ _____ “ Spill Your Heart is reminiscent of The Verlaines or Sneaky Feelings… Definitely one to watch.” (The Dominion Post) ____________________________________________________________ _____ .. -- -- -- -- CDBABY LINK for THE DARK BEAKS: Spill Your Heart --The album can be obtained from cdbaby.com/cd/darkbeaks (US/ World) www.amplifier.co.nz/release/20118/spill_your_heart.html (NZ) www.smokecds.com (NZ) www.powertoolrecords.co.nz (NZ) www.powertoolrecords.de (Europe) Or by contacting the band directly via this MySpace page

Sounds Like: A lot of people think The Dark Beaks sound like early Flying Nun jangle pop bands like The Bats, Sneaky Feelings or the Verlaines. Those who don't mention those (imagined) similarities often just use words like "warm", "weird", "lush", "bubbling" and "beautiful" to describe what they sound like.
