I am here for Friends

About Me

This is the tale of Tom (edited version). It is a story of adventure, suspense, drama, heartbreak and romance. O.K., I lied. Romance is not in this story due to fact that I have never really had a girlfriend (which means that heartbreak, drama and suspense are not in this story either). But stay tuned to see how that all turns out. Anyway, it's still a decent story so lets start from the beginning. A long, long time ago in the very small galaxy of Tuolumne....I was born. (Seriously, it is a really small town and it sadly got its first stop light installed a year ago). The town is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas and I spent the first 20 years of my life enjoying all that the wonderful mountains had to offer. During those years I went to Summerville High School and the local JC- Columbia College. To finish up college I left the mountains and headed to my next favorite location, the beach, to attend Cal Poly and major in Journalism. It was here where I got sucked into the very addicting habit known as surfing. It was tough writing for the Mustang Daily, going to classes and battling my addiction, but somehow I graduated. I have since moved back to the mountains and although I go through surfing withdrawals and have to drive to SLO about once a month, I am stoked to be back at home. Yes, I am living at home (Hey, I am saving money and eat good food..I'm happy). I still have a lot of adventures I want to do before I start a career, so I have used my college education to become a landscaper. Yippee! There is no better way to pass the time than good old manual labor (rakes and shovels have become my friends). Yet it really isn't all that bad. I am always outside and it keeps me from having to go to the gym. Plus, I usually don't work when it rains (I pray for rain a lot) which means a LOT of snowboarding. Yet the best part of my job is that it allows me to do what I really want to do...travel. Yea, my boss is really cool and I can take off for a road trip or a backpacking trip whenever I want (which is quite often). So I save up, travel, go broke, and work again...it's a great cycle. So far I have been able to check out Australia, Kauai, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and most of the U.S. during a two month tour with my friends band Sherwood as their "merch guy." I recently returned from an epic road trip to the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Bryce National Park and New Mexico. I am still planning for more adventures in the future (Maybe a Costa Rica or New Zealand surf trip), before I get a "real" job. But right now I am really enjoying my life and am happy with what I am doing. For those who think I am a loser for not using my major, I will add that I recently got a part time job writing for a small newspaper called the Sierra Mountain Times where I mostly write outdoor articles. Someday I hope to write for a travel/outdoor/adventure type magazine, but we'll see. I guess I just don't want to grow up yet. Anyway, I know its not the greatest story, but this is who I am. That's the tale of Tom in a nutshell...preferably a pistachio. The End.

My Interests

My interests pretty much revolve around the outdoors. I try to explore as much of God's amazing creation as often as I can. My main passion is hiking and backpacking. I love to hike places I've never been, and every weekend I try to explore somewhere new. My favorite backpacking place is the Emigrant Wilderness and my favorite hike is Yosemite's half dome. I've done it like a dozen times and it is always amazing. I am also a fan of fishing, rock climbing, exploring caves and abandoned mines, mountain biking, snowboarding, surfing, wakeboarding, golf, mini-golf, ping-pong, bowling, road trips and short walks on the beach. When I'm not doing something active, music is my next favorite thing. It soothes the soul. I am into the rock/alternative/indie/punk/emo stuff. I also try to fool around on the guitar when I have time and write songs that no one will ever hear.

I'd like to meet:

I am still waiting for my Lafawnda. I'm just a little T.O.’d that she hasn’t sent me a full body shot yet! Someday my friends…someday.

Memento Yet I can't leave these out either: Robin Hood (the cartoon), High Fidelity, Arlington Road, Rushmore, Bottle Rocket, Fight Club, Donnie Darko, Escape from Alcatraz, Saving Silverman, Ace Venturea, Austin Powers, Elf, Ferris Buellers Day off, Best in Show, Beverly Hills Ninja, Liar Liar, The Magnificent Seven, The Burbs, The Royal Tennenbaums, The Truman Show, There's Something About Mary, Trains Planes and Auto Mobiles, Rush Hour, School of Rock, Shanghi Noon, Sgt. I am sure the Chronicles of Narnia wil be in here soon.

Television:

I used to have one word for this category. It was "Sienfeld." Then I had two words for this category when the amazing show, Arrested Development was on the air. This show was amazing and could have potentially surpassed the greatness of Sienfeld if it wasn't cancelled. But thankfully The Office arrived just in time and it has been taking over most of my Thursday nights. Yet when I am not watching one of these three shows you will find me flipping between Conan O'brien, That 70s Show, Family Guy, Spin City, Friends and King of Queens for some good laughs. Oh wait. I forgot that there are non-funny shows out there that deserve some recognition: golf, the weather channel, the discovery channel and for awhile I was getting suckered into watching the O.C....but don't tell anyone. I also want to get into 24...but I don't have a TV.

Books:

Right now I am really into magazines. Surfer, Snowboarding, Relevant, Backpacker, Paste, National Geographic Adventure, and Outside (I really like pictures). But I wish I read more books. Books are good. Speaking of good books you should check this book out. It was written by none other than the great T.Y. Atkins...my Dad! It is called Let's Cross Over to the Other Side. (It is pretty short for all you non-readers). You can get it at Mtn. Bookstore or on Amazon.comor come by the house and say hi. I haven't read a whole lot since I've been out of school, but here is what I've read in the last year: Wild at Heart, The Purpose Driven Life, The Case for Christ, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Chronicles of Narnia (all 7 of them), No Compromise, Mere Christianity, Blue Like Jazz, The Baronet's Song, The Shepherds Castle and Monster. I really enjoy C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia and Mere Christianity)- he has an awesome way of putting words to make his point understandable. J.R. Tolkien is also amazing! The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy are my favorite right now and I can't believe I didn't read them sooner. Yet my favorite author is Frank Peretti (Monster). However his earlier books, This Present Darkness, Piercing the Darkness, The Oath, The Prophet and The Visitation are much better. I am also a big fan of true story books- My favorites are Touching the Void and Coming out of the Ice. Speaking of good true stories...I also try to read the Bible everyday so I can continue to try and fathom the wonders of God's love. I think that the Gospels contain the greatest love story of all time!

Heroes:

I would have to say that my hero is someone that died so that we may live. Someone who suffered so that we may have peace and joy. Someone who conquered death and rose from the grave and is preparing an eternal home for all who believe in Him. Someone who loves us no matter what we have done. Someone who is real and desires a relationship with all of us. Someone who is the way, the truth and the life.
