Ken began writing music in late 1972 on the piano. He started playing drums at the age of 9 (1964) around the time of Beatlemania first arriving in the United States. At 19 he began fooling around with an Acoustic guitar.
August 1978 was a very good time, Ken wrote "Girl from Spain" around midnight on a Sunday morning while taking a break from restoring a house he was going to share with some roommates. "Girl from Spain" became the first song good enough for the radio (Next to Tonight My Love which was written shortly later). "In my mind I'd finally arrived as a decent songwriter which added more confidence to the whole process." In The Studio: For all you recording buffs, I usually use an MXL large 1-inch Condenser Mic on my studio Vocals which gives me clear crisp Vocals without any added bass response (called Proximity Effect). Shure mics sound great on drums (such as the SM-57 and 545SD models) and other instrument mic tasks but the MCA Mic excels at everything it records because of its sensitivity. I also own a Behringer B-1 large Condenser Mic which is super sensitive and can distort easily if not set right. The MXL MCA is no longer made, but you can still buy an MXL V63MBP or the DRK Kit which are very similar Studio Battery-Powered Condenser Microphones. The MXL MCA has an MXL 1006 battery-powered circuit board inside. UPDATE, I WANT TO SINCERELY THANK MXL MICROPHONES IN CA. FOR LOCATING ANOTHER MCA CONDENSER MIC FOR MY STUDIO (ON SHORT NOTICE). "I find that over the last 5 years or so the music is getting better while lyrics arrive slower on some songs or sometimes not at all. I still have songs that arrive in one go, both Lyrics and music at the same time. "For George" happened in this way in under a few minutes, where I literally played the whole thing through on the keyboard and every lyric was there along with it. "For George" is written as a Tribute to George Harrison (1943-2001). "On other songs, the music is done first and then I'll actually sit down to add lyrics when I go to make the first Copyright demo." THE STORY BEHIND "TWO SHIPS"... The song "Two Ships" was written for a Brunette woman named Jenn I met in Northern Florida on December 17, 2003 (it was a Wednesday) who happened to walk in the side door of the Goodwill Store at 3:15pm and began looking at furniture. She quickly crossed the room and started a conversation with me for about 7-8 minutes but after she left this store I never saw her again (like Two Ships in the night). She may work in Health care in Florida somewhere but I have no idea if I will ever see her again so-- if you read this Jenn-- send me a Friend Request. She may have tried to call me on the phone about a week later but I was gone (like a ship in the night). I knew her name before I met her because it kept coming to me during quiet times weeks before but I have no idea what her last name is or how to contact her. She bought a small glass lamp the day I met her but paid in Cash so there was no way to find out what her last name was. A real mystery...Go Figure. So now you know the story behind the song "Two Ships." I wrote the music in 'the morning on the keyboard and then had to write the lyrics after so I could record the Copyright Demo. WIKIPEDIA ARTICLES I initiated and wrote the majority of the Wikipedia articles named British Tape Recorder (BTR) on the EMI BTR 4 track "Green machines" that the Beatles used to record most of their albums (up to the song Hey Jude) and a second article on Jazz Pianist Extraordinaire, Lisa Addeo, in 2006.
