Described as a 'live Madamme Tassauds’ BLACK HEROES IN THE HALL OF FAME is an explosion of entertainment and information guaranteed to inspire, educate and entertain all audiences and all races Divided into six acts, the production is a musical and dramatic explosion of 6 glittering Tableaux and a Grand Finale that brings to life the important figures in Black History - The Great Kings and Queens of Africa, The Great Freedom Fighters, The Great Achievers and The Great Entertainers, as well as a Great Debate between Malcolm X, Dr Martin Luther King, Marcus Garvey and Nelson Mandela - who eloquently discuss the issues that they experienced in their struggle, while relating it to those that are still affecting Black people up till this day.The show was launched as a Community project in London at the Shaw Theatre in July 1987 to celebrate the centenary of Marcus Garvey, thanks to a modest grant from Camden Council and with the assistance of the late Mr. Denzil Parry and Aquarius Hair salon, and the administrative support of Gale Jn-Baptiste.After its sell out launch, and driven by the massive demand of the Black community to see it, the show actually re-opened the doors of the Hackney Empire Theatre (which at the time was operating as a Bingo Hall) - before becoming the first British all Black musical to perform in the West End at the Astoria Theatre in 1989.Since then it has notched up almost 2000 performances worldwide in the UK, Jamaica and the USA, and has broken box office records and received rave reviews and numerous prestigious awards in Chicago, Washington DC, Cleveland, Miami and Detroit during its USA Black History Month tours in1992 and1994.After a hiatius of almost 10 years the production was re-launched at the Brixton Academy in 2003 to a sell out audience, and in March 2007 the show celebrated its 20th anniversary in production with a short season at its spiritual home at the Hackney Empire Theatre in London and with performances at the Colston Hall in Bristol, the De Momfort Hall in Leicester, and at Fairfield Hall in Croydon, Surrey, proving that the show still retains its mystery and charm and the massive support of the Black community in the UK.BLACK HEROES IN THE HALL OF FAME boasts a cast of 50 actors, singers, dancers, musicians and technicnicians, and was devised as an ‘organic pageant’ - allowing the producers to keep updating its content - and today, 21 years after its launch, it remains the most recognized and successful Black British theatre production. The production has created new generations of theatre goers wherever and whenever it plays and has developed a legacy as a 'must see family event’, boasting one of the highest ever returning audience ratio for a major theatrical production, with many seeing the show on at least three or more occasion
