Our Enchanted Ideal History!
In the 1920 the Enchanted Forest was called Ideal Hall. It was the most popular dance spot in Cape Girardeau. The hall was popular with the high school and college crowd throughout the early twenties. It was located where The Enchanted Forest is today at 811 Broadway next to the Broadway Theater. At the time Jim Brodtman had a restaurant on the first floor (now Cherokee Trails) and operated the dance hall upstairs. Dances were held on Friday nights as the crowds would drift in after the local schools games or other town events. At this place many bands of the 1920s got their start. Bands like The Agony Four, Peg Meyer’s Melody Kings, The Hot Hops, and world renowned jazz musician Jess Stacy would play here in the winters from 1921-1925.
In the late 1920s and early 1930s, R.B. Baker opened Valet Cleaners, it lasted until 1931. In 1932 811 Broaway was the site of The Service Company of the 140th Infantry, Missouri National Guard. Its commanding officer was Capt. Percy Little. Beard’s Sporting Shop moved in down stairs and was in business 44 years. In the late 1930s The American Legion moved in upstairs. The Legion held many dances here with acts like Chubby Checker and other big names of the time. The site had remained The American Legion untill 2003 when it became The Enchanted Forest. Today the building is back to what it was in the 1920. A popular local hang out for high school and college students to meet and enjoy todays music performed by national touring acts and local/regional musicians of all ages.
