Petra, which means “rock” in Greek, was formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman and was around until 2005, when the band retired. Petra is one of the biggest Christian bands there has been. Winning 4 Grammys and 10 Doves Awards and was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. In their 33 years of rocking, Petra released 24 albums, and sold nearly 10 million copies. Through numerous line-up changes, the band showed stability and continued to produce albums despite changes in genre and the general taste of the public. Petra always maintained its commitment to preaching the gospel through music. With such strong and powerful lyrics, Petra led and is still leading people to Christ. The band recorded one of their final performances, in Franklin, Tennessee, being Petra’s final albums released. The last performance was complete in the early hours off January 1, 2006.
