Baron Saturday

About Me

Baron Saturday is the vehicle for singer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter, Steve Gerard. Steve, a native of California, started Baron Saturday in Denver in 1987 with guitarist Maria Moran. The resulting music veered between psychedelic pop and metallic goth as exemplified by the vinyl singles they released and on the full length Darwin Among The Machines. DATM featured some great bass tracks from Bob Drake and drum programming from Wayne Gerbrandt. When Maria left, Steve worked with Aric Strah, John Rivera, Steve Forker, and Bill Zorack to produce the Change For The Strange album, which leaned more on the pop side, while still sideswiping into Steve's comedic country songs, and Tom Waits-ian experiments. During this period, Steve lived in a freezer in an old factory in an industrial neighborhood outside of downtown Denver. With the departure of Bill Zorack, Steve changed locales and started a new quartet with Rich Van Hoesen, Jason Kasper and Keith Starkweather, producing the Under The Covers and Sketchbook albums. Rich and Steve began a series of side projects to cover their impulses outside of the Baron Saturday sound. Rich's punk and android tendencies led them to produce the Universal Matters record, and together with Adrian Romero on guitar and bass, they founded the Puckered Starfish Ensemble, a collective dedicated to absurd, obscene music. Fast And Bulbous was the first PSE record, followed by the self titled Puckered Starfish Ensemble.
