Grain proclaimed Local Hero of November in LiveXS Popmagazine!
"Grain sounds playful, cheeky, rebellious, exciting and adventurous at the same time! The proportions between challenging and experimental music, without loss of an accessible sound, are in perfect balance."
LiveXS Local Hero 11 2009
Grain....sounds like melting cheese, mashed potatoes with lots of gravy, strawberries and cream, lemon and red wine..spring and autumn, ugly but beautiful. It seems so far away, but when you open your eyes you know
it’s in you.....
Grain is Joyce-Leonie van der Hoeven.
She started as a singer / guitarplayer in various bands and in 2009 she graduated at the Conservatory of Amsterdam (Major singing pop & Minor singing Classical) & singer songwriter.
Grain delivers a variety of strong and intense songs with dark humour, tension, rebellion and theatricality.
She has developed an authentic style as a singer songwriter, where her idiosyncratic, extraordinary visions of life and a lot of musical influences (Black Sabbath, Michael Stipe, Led Zeppelin, PJ Harvey, Tori Amos,
Kyuss, Tool, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Bjork, Alanis Morisette, Eddie Vedder..) are coming together in wonderful compositions.
Her excellent reviewed debut album
"Shut Your Mouth Kevin", recorded in The Netherlands and New York
with very well known musicians Dennis Leeflang on drums, Barend Courbois on bass, Brian Sanders on cello and Wilco Botermans on Theremin, was released in June 2009.
..â€Originality splashes off , this truly is a wonderful album â€.. Musicfrom.nl ‘09
..â€
***** Drips with emotions without getting melodramatic, sharp edge that makes the album very interesting to listen to. Her music enriches the genre".. Music Maker 08 ’09
..â€
Grain excites and surprises every time with her mysterious slant, rebellion, challenging lyrics & an exceptionally smooth voice. Her songs are all high quality pop pearlsâ€.. OOR ‘09
Ronald van Oudheusden (Live uit Lloyd / Branie voor twee):
.. "A musical mystery, almost baroque in its appearance. The red hair, her enchanting voice and beautiful pianoplay, a very nice appearance. Let Grain sing! "..
The song “Dogs†lasted for weeks in the Dutch Indie Charts and reached position 3 in september '09.
Grain was proclaimed
Local Hero in LiveXS Popmagazine:
"Grain sounds playful, cheeky, rebellious, exciting and adventurous at the same time! The proportions between challenging and experimental music, without loss of an accessible sound, are in perfect balance." LiveXS, 11 2009
..â€Grain’s voice has a flexibility that flows perfectly with her piano playing. Her musical education did not harm her authenticity. The songs are put together very well, she knows her divisionâ€.. Sjoerd van der Goot, FRET magazine 11 ‘09
In
2010 we have to organize a lot of gigs and preferably a festival tour too, according to Grain.
"Only on stage you’ll get directly confronted with the magic of the music and I want everyone to feel that magic. Thereafter we hope to release our second album, we are already working on it.
I am naive, I still feel like I am a little girl with a big elusive dream. I can’t do anything but pursue that dream. I want to rock the India stage at Lowlands and play at Glastonbury some day. "
