Ten years of classics
****** JUST ANNOUNCED *******
DAMIAN LAIRD (BELFAST)
Damian Laird's direction and DJ/Producer career have always shared very close paths. His musical upbringing allowed for him to explore the education of different sounds - from playing the piano, beating on a drumkit, learning the saxophone to listening to early electronic in the 1980s. His forward thinking outlook spurred on the interest in DJ'ing and soon after - music production.
Since his introduction into the music industry as Hardware records manager in 1997, Damian Laird has been an influencing energy in Australian dance music. His position as manager of Hardware Records for close to three years, led to a further two years as manager of Hardware Distribution (2000- 2002). During this period, Damian made a considerable impact on the dance music scene throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The role of distribution has an extremely important and substantial influence on what people in the country are listening to. Damien has the world of music at his fingertips - new sounds and fresh output is what he is all about, whether it is behind a desk or behind the decks, he is always contributing to the broadening of sounds in Melbourne and Australia. After his work at Hardware Distribution, Damian then moved to set up and develop 24-7 Distribution. Listen 24-7 is a derivative of Australia's longest running retail record stroe - "Rhythem and Soul", and Damian is now currently working on his own personal projects and has left the world of music distribution. Each of the positions at Hardware and Listen have enabled Damian to be in close contact with record labels, artists and DJs from around the world, which in turn has given him the opportunity to break now sounds and labels via DJing. His distribution network has also enabled him to remain on top of the far reaching international dance music circuit. Recording commitments (2002) have seen Damian release music on BMG Worldwide and Germany's "Morris-Audio" label. In both instances, Damian's flexibility with the studio demonstrates his ability to develop new takes on formulated music as it is known today.
Event Profile2008 marked the 20 year anniversary of "Acid House", the musical phenomenon that birthed the explosion of dance music and club culture. This year, the anniversary has been acknowledged and celebrated by numerous magazine articles, mix CDs and even major overseas events that now include the obligatory "Old School" tent or stage (808 State at Gatecrasher anybody?). But if you've noticed that it's been a little quiet on the local front, you're not alone. It's exactly what DJ's Superluca, Ross Anthony, Scott Feigan and Greg Harris realised and a subsequent beer-fuelled planning session led to the creation of "Old Money" - an intimate night of good times and good friends set to the backdrop of 80's and 90's dance anthems. The first party at Roxannes (address here) saw 260 guests boogie the night away to classic house, hip house, tech, funk and hip hop. The night attracted an eclectic mix of old school die-hards, curious newcomers and clubbers who had simply rocked up to "catch the vibe". The feedback from punters and venue alike was great, and the boys hope to repeat their success with the highly anticipated second installment: "Old Money II" which features an extended line-up, additional party room, NEXO soundstage, visuals by Wallad and appropriately old-school-style flyer (check the movie style artwork!).Taking it back to the old school for another night of booty shaking mayhem, the Old Money Sound System will rock the house with the anthems that defined two decades of dance music. From Chicago to Detroit to London to Melbourne - it's a celebration of the tunes that ushered in a a new era of dance, dress, style and culture. Pump up the volume!Old Money II : : Inherit the groove
DJ's
Name: Scott Feigan Highlights: Supporting such luminaries as Soul of Man, Krafty Kuts and the Freestylers. 3 Tunes that never leave his record box: - Loose Cannons "Superstar (Boris Duglosch remix)" - Chable & Bonnici "Ride" - KLF "Last train to Transcentral" A familiar name in the Aussie breaks scene, Scott has mixed it up with the best of 'em and has supported a "who's who" of A-list breaks artists including Krafty Kuts, Nubreed and Meat Katie. Known for his energetic sets at the fabled Relax parties and a member of the Beats Working collective, Scott's record box contains more breaks than an Evil Knievel x-ray!
Name: Greg Harris Highlights: Playing at the reverred "Movement" parties, meeting the legendary Grandmaster Flash backstage at 2 Tribes. 3 Tunes that never leave his record box: - Bomb the Bass "Beat Dis" - Steve Silk Hurley "Jack Your Body" - Aleem "Confusion" A walking encyclopeadia of musical knowledge and history, Greg was blown away when he first heard Colonel Abrahms "Trapped" on pirate radio in his hometown London in 1985. Only ten at the time, it became the first record he purchased, starting a love affair with music and record collecting that continues to this day - leading to appearances behind the decks at "The Saloon", "French Connection" and "Breakfeet" among others.
Name: Ross Anthony Highlights: Supporting a plethora of internationals and organising the infamour "Movement" parties. 3 Tunes that never leave his record box: - Grace "Not Over Yet" - The Grid "A Beat Called Love" - K Klass "Let Me Show You" He might drink too much red wine and spend far too much money on sneakers, but if there's one thing Ross cannot be accused of, it's that his sets are uninspiring! "Exquisite track selection" and "Old School Journey" are his middle names (although due to printing restraints, we chose to stick with "Ross Anthony" on the flyers)! On the production tip, Ross is a Pro-Tools afficiado and will not hesitate to drop an exclusive re-edit or one of his own productions into the mix. You have been warned!
Name: Superluca Highlights: Playing CMOOG in Gold Byon and supporting Coldcut's/DJ Food's/Ninja Tunes QLD show. 3 Tunes that never leave his record box: - Cameo "Word Up" - Jetsto Funk "Say it Again" - Vernon Burch "Getup and Dance" Luca is not your average "garden variety" DJ. Whether it's dropping a rare funk gem during a house night or throwing an old school hip hop acapella into the mix, you can expect the unexpected when Luca steps behind the console. It's why he developed a loyal following during his residency at the Gold Coast's "Swinging Safari" and "French Connection" in Melbourne with a crowd who loved their Parliament and Prince as well as their Deep Dish or Bob Sinclair!
