Doc Richards's Profile

From the foothills of the eastern Montana plains to the Delaware Valley; from the corn fields of Illinois to the red clay creeks of south Texas and finally to Calfornia, Doc Richards rootless existence in the back of an old Ford sedan moving from town to town across America provided a strong influence in his music and songwriting.
Cutting his teeth in service clubs and on Armed Forces radio while stationed at a combat support base during the Vietnam War, he returned to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1974 and assembled a band called the Wires from bay area sidemen from groups as diverse as Taj Mahal and Bobby Bare.
He began writing and pitching songs to artists like Country Joe MacDonald and Hoyt Axton in 1978, continued to work day jobs and part time in radio, playing clubs on weekends and building a small reputation with players from Bakersfield, CA, home of Buck Owens.
In 1993, Doc received the Presidential Volunteerism Award presented by President Clinton on behalf of local musicians for charitable work in the Lockwood-Jolon valley raising funds for programs and projects of various non-profit groups.
In 1993, Doc pulled up stakes from California and moved home to Montana. In 1997, Doc and his wife Virginia relocated to Boulder, CO. Doc retired in 2003, though he continues to play with friends from the West coast and Nashville.
Doc Richards is a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 20-623 in Denver, CO, and ASCAP. His also a former contributing music editor to Briefme.com and columnist for Northern Colorado's Riff Magazine.
The following businesses are the companies to which I owe so much for their support and help in providing instruments and accessories for my program: The Denver Folklore Center, Denver, CO; Music-Go-Round, Littleton, CO; Wildwood Guitars, Louisville, CO; Woodsongs Lutherie, Boulder, CO; Gryphon Guitars, Palo Alto, CA; Banana's at Large, San Rafael, CA; Chandler Guitars and Electronics, Yuba City, CA; Elderly Music, Lansing, MI; Daddy's Junky Music in New England.
