Much of the signature appeal of Marion Crane is the dark undertones of the music mixed with a healthy dose of black sarcasm, whether it be through the lyrics or their approach to art in general – they would say it is just a reflection of the times we live in.
It all started when singer/guitarist Thomas Hill moved from his home state of Ohio (“the serial killer capitalâ€) to the beaches of Jacksonville, Florida in early 2008. After spending years in other musical groups, Hill decided to put together a new project, something that would fully bring out the “nightmare in my head†as he calls it. Marion Crane is the soundtrack to that nightmare.
Late in the summer of 2008, Hill recorded a 4 song EP at Martell Productions in Kingsland, Georgia. Jacksonville music scene veteran Bobby Amaru (Burn Season) laid down the drum tracks, Stan Martell mixing and producing, and Hill doing the rest (vox, guitars, bass).
The response to the new material was immediate. Songs like “Illegitimate†& “No Exit†were already being aired on hundreds of internet radio stations, and the EP was released to a warm reception on iTunes.
With the music spreading to fans across the internet, Hill quietly began recruiting the best-of-the-best in the Jacksonville music underground.
Enter lead guitarist Jasper Judge - a well-traveled and multi-talented engineer who’s playing style was a perfect fit for the Marion Crane sound. Being a veteran of several previous groups, he immediately made his impact on the band known, with a perfect compliment of ethereal leads and tortured guitar sounds.
Also joining at the same time was bassist Mitch Gregory, a veteran of previous bands with Judge, and a young but well-rounded percussionist Adam Tillis, who had played drums in several bands in the Jacksonville area.
The band then hit the road to spread the music to as many fans as possible, blanketing the Northern Florida music scene. In just a few months time, word-of-mouth quickly began spreading about this new rock band from Jacksonville called Marion Crane, who was already drawing fans to their shows in the hundreds.
In May of 2009, the band had the honor of performing at the 7th Annual Lex & Terry Ticket to Ride at Adamec Harley Davidson in Jacksonville, in support of the Autism Society of America. Not only did they donate their time to the good cause, their live show also impressed both Lex & Terry who decided to showcase Marion Crane on their nationally syndicated radio show. “Illegitimate†and “No Exit†were both aired, with Terry ending the segment by saying, “This is good. I would not surprised if this band got signed. I really would not be surprised at allâ€.
As of this writing the band is currently in studio recording 2 new tracks, as well as remixing and remastering the original 4 songs that Hill recorded, in an effort to have a professional release.
“The original four songs that were recorded last year never received the release that they deserved, “ says Hill. “Now fans can get a chance to hear how they should truly sound, as well as get some new material too.â€
Along with the cd launch comes a late summer tour that will take the band through the south and southeastern parts of the US, as well as the Atlantic coast and the Midwest. The band intends to release these dates in June. Marion Crane continues on as one of the hottest unsigned bands in the country
