NEWS!!:
Our newest member of PhoenixRose. Jack Jackman hales from CLeveland, Ohio and has played in critically acclaimed bands such as Degenerate Machine, Dusk at Hand, and Hale the Reign. He's a machine when it comes the bass guitar.
One of the newest (and, we emphatically claim, one of the best) bands to hit the scene is Phoenix Rose. Created from an amalgamation of bands you may remember from a little bit ago - Ysas and All Is Vanity - the members rearranged, combined, and rebirthed, like a veritable phoenix that rose from the ashes. Ah, now we understand their name. For those of you that like to imagine an actual loral rose, dark and velvety (such as myself), that imagery applies, too. The “rose” stands for passion, of which the band members have oodles.

To understand their music, we must tread in that place between rock, metal, and hardcore. Or, rather, as the band puts it, their character is “a**hole.” They like to take their chemistry and musical skill over the top. Front man, Isaac, muses “… I think that all of our songs are so ridiculous. like there’s always something in every one of our songs where you go ‘Oh my god.’ [we’re] epic a**holes! like, that’s way too much!” then, i believe, they used the term “shredding people’s anuses out.” Well, you get the idea.

Let’s meet the members. Isaac, previously of All is Vanity, is the shredder (guitarist) and front man. His roots lie in metal. Austin, the bassist, also played in All is Vanity. Colin, the other guitarist, used to play for Ysas. He hails from the punk tradition, exclaiming “I never even played in a metal band!” Paul, the drummer and vocalist, also came from Ysas and has played in bands of many styles, including reggae.

Suffice to say, all the members of Phoenix Rose have been in the scene for a long time. We asked them how they felt the scene was back in the late 90’s. “I remember the scene being a lot better back then. It went through a lull. I remember when unit 101 was around. I thought it was good.” In what way was it good? “More packed. More support. People actually cared.” We all indulge in a it of complaining about how people only come out to watch individual bands and aren’t out to support everyone playing in a show. A ray of hope strikes the conversation when Paul relates, “It seems like it’s starting to pick up again. The last show [we had] on friday night was packed. You couldn’t even walk around.”

Back on topic, let’s return to the discussion at hand – why is this band so good and why are they so damn passionate? For one, like in any good relationship, Phoenix Rose’s members constantly push each other to improve. as Colin puts it, “They’re pushing me to be better at what I’m trying to be and I hope I do the same thing for them.” Phoenix Rose as a whole is also constantly trying to push the limit. Isaac explains how that sets this band apart from his past experiences. “With other bands that i’ve been in, it’s always like they were stuck at some point. they’re like ‘we’re good enough.’… [Phoenix Rose has] gotten more done as a band in eight months than all of us have in our past careers.” The enthusiasm for what they have comes through and when we point it out, Colin responds, “We’re having a good time and we’re hoping that everyone’s having a good time!”
Now we come to the part where the band tells us what they’d like to do with their music. Yes, they want to tour. Yes, they want to be professional musicians and make a living off of their music. Phoenix Rose has made some strides in that direction already, currently focusing on a connection that may take them on tour in Japan in the near future. in the long term, Isaac expresses “I would love to be even half as popular as bands such as Metallica and Guns and Roses, but honestly, if I come home to a nice home everyday and I have – “ Paul chimes in “five cars, an suv, and a pool.” they laugh at this and confide that really they’d just be happy pulling rent. In the short term, Phoenix Rose is really just looking to build their fan base. “It’s fun to play in front of a crowd that you just met and they’re into your music, that’s great! But to actually have a crowd that follows you around everywhere...”

Phoenix Roses’ final desire is a simple one – they want to send a positive message to their peers. Isaac (20 years old) fleshes it out in detail. “For me, I just want to encourage people to think real hard about their situations because there are a lot of people that complain about their life being unfair. I would say 25 and under, that whole age group complains. They don’t take action. They blame everyone else for their problems and if I can just encourage them to think about what’s going on in their life…”
