You know, lyrically, I don't call myself a Christian artist, but I definitely am. I like to write in a way that people can relate to and apply in their lives. Religion means so many different things to everybody, depending on their experience. I like to write for universality — is that a word? — just stuff that anybody can relate to whether they are a person of faith or not, stuff that has hope and a message to it. It's not a Christian album, by any means, but there definitely is a background of that for me, and you can tell in the words if you are looking for it". - Jessica Sonner, "Westword" article, published: April 3, 2008 ....THE PROTESTANTS derive their insightful music from the perpetual struggle against hypocritical authority and control. Inspired by the courage of Jesus and Martin Luther, both of whom fearlessly challenged their so-called “spiritual leaders” in radically profound ways, their music attempts to reaffirm the original intent of the glorious Protestant movement of the great American culture. In their songs, THE PROTESTANTS seek to decry, or “protest” the way certain social groups and anti-social individuals have been continually duped, manipulated and misled by the ever-present hierarchy, even though they know better, kind of like the way it’s always been since the beginning of time. They combine their rockin’ music and sharp lyrics in an attempt to empower these spiritually vacant “infidels” to realize that they don’t have to be “victimized” by these deceivers anymore. They can personally do something about it if they merely choose to stay focused and connected to their natural, inner spirituality and hold on to it for dear life, as if it’s all they have (which it is) and not look to be constantly played and exploited through “social engineering” by the all powerful and detached oligarchy, including the duplicitous and pathetic, “Oprah” media, who participate so adoringly, like “lap dogs” at their partisan feet. What an incredible ideology! Sadly though, that’s the part most of these gullible, “Kool-Aid drinkers” don’t get, since they’ll fall for anything that’s driven by the phony, secular media, fraudulently represented by its complicit, pandering counterparts Hollywood & Madison Avenue. They’ve become conditioned to give up, to accept the path of least resistance and to deny the glory from within, as they’re perennially unrepentant to acknowledge that they’ve been “had” like hapless saps, only to be fooled again and again in a “New York minute”. Songs like, “Get Ready”, which likewise challenge the tragically indisposed to rise up and reacquire their natural, God given birthright, to be free from the bondages of bureaucratic oppression, “political correctness” and inconsequential metaphysical sensitivity, but also recognize revenge against the “elites” who’ve historically and relentlessly imposed their will on them and for them, in their own name. Or in the song "Time is Money" where Speed D’mone solemnly laments this timely serenade: "Put it in perspective, politicians get elected to control the flow". Heaven help us ….
