Quinton Hatfield"Shake that Laffy Taffy"Those four words may be the most hated AND most loved of 2006. HHNLive.com writer Quinton Hatfield hooks up with the most recognizable member of D4L, Fabo, to discuss his up-coming solo album, the "Laffy Taffy" haters, D4L's beef with Dem Franchize Boyz and much more.Q: D4L was successful last year with the song "Laffy Taffy". How does it make you feel when people say songs like that ain't real Hip-Hop?Fabo: [Makes a crazy noise], I mean it goes right in one ear and out the other.Q: [Laughs] Why does the word "struggle" always seem to apply to the south?Fabo: You got to look at the south, we coming up out of slavery, poverty. I can go on and on telling you about the south. People from the south are not gonna be scholars to a certain extent and everybody just hating. Eight of out ten people from the north had a chance as far as they ancestry to do a little bit better than eight out of ten people from the south so you gotta look at it like that. We ain't never had a chance so we always been fighting, that's just part of the south's M.O., that's just part of our resume.Q: Overall, what makes it so tough though?Fabo: If you try to go get a job when you got a prison record and you lie to them when they find out what they do? They fire you. If they hire you from the jump on that job then everybody look at you like you gonna steal something all the time, that's how it is with the south.Q: What is Fabo bringing to make the south more versatile?Fabo: I mean the south is already versatile, Fabo is just a small part of the eager minds that's ready to be unleashed in the world and the south's the truth that's just it. I already played a major role solidifying myself in history. I shook it up a little bit, I shook up the industry a little bit. I came with a whole bunch of colors and made people smile again instead of worrying about killing somebody all the time. People feel good about dancing, go to the talent shows now and look at how I crunk up the intensity in a talent show. If you go to a single high school talent show the eagerness they put in trying to learn the dances and stuff, the routines that they got just ain't nothing that you ain't never seen before, that's Fabo right now.Q: Can you define what "Snap Music" is?Fabo: Snap music is just a phase in rap history.Q: How is that different from crunk music?Fabo: I don't know I really can't answer that, snap is just a phase in rap history.Q: Can you give me a brief explanation of what happened between D4L and Dem Franchize Boyz?Fabo: They came through our camp and got a little training or whatever, it's just like somebody coming into training not agreeing with the whole program that's going on. I don't really know. I got locked up around the time all the crazy events went down or whatever, but to the best of my recollection they just ran off with the blow [laughs]. Somebody give you a bomb you just run off with it, you turn around and throw it up [laughs]. I guess they just got to hold they own in society, you know they look good at it right now...I love Dem Franchize Boyz.Q: Why would they come at ya'll like that?Fabo: They never called my name they just spoke to D4L in general. They called our name in songs so I guess they had personal beef with those guys...I'm cool.Q: Why a solo project?Fabo: I had a solo project before I came to D4L, I was like a draft pick. My name was ringing bells in these streets probably before you had a job, probably before I had a job because I ain't never had no job. I mean literally because I been rapping and singing in Atlanta nearly all my life. I was literally known for going to talent shows and literally grabbing the microphone in anybody hood...at the Pool Palace in Atlanta. You can't just go to the Pool Palace if you from the other side, it's strictly for the west side. Now people from all over Atlanta come to that spot.Q: I heard a lot of dances originated in the Pool Palace.Fabo: Man a lot of dances just come from Atlanta period, this is a crazy place, you ever been here?Q: I haven't been there yet but I'm coming soon [laughs].Fabo: Man if you go to the club everybody in the club got they own dance dawg. That's where I learned how to dance at. Go to the club and you'd be surprised at all the new dances they got. I like that new "Chicken Noodle Soup" that's a real difficult dance to do. These kids love that, they be sitting there swinging their arms letting it rain and clearing it out.Q: What's up with the signature white Fabo glasses you got?Fabo: My brother got life so until they let him go I'll where those white shades. He used to wear white shades all the time.Q: Back to the new solo album, I heard it's coming out through Mike Jones "Ice Age" Entertainment?Fabo: Never been with Mike Jones never been with Ice Age Entertainment, always been Fabo husslin.Q: How would you rate yourself lyrically as an artist?Fabo: Ten.Q: Why so?Fabo: 10 or 10 ½.Q: What's the title of your solo project?Fabo: "Gik Muzik".Q: Are you doing anything besides putting out music?Fabo: I got a new TV show which is Fabo.Tv. I'm in negotiations right now for a couple of movie deals, because I'm a real character. I'm trying to get up into stand up comedy and you will be surprised at what come up out of my mouth. I rather Gik with the gang than kill you with it. I'm a real slick cat so I got a fly little mouth piece on me. You ask me how I rate myself as an artist and I feel ten. I can back it up.Q: What made you decide to come out with a TV show?Fabo: Because you just got to see me dawg, log onto www.myspace.com/sanpking and then were gonna have another interview and you gonna ask me all these same questions. I am a sight to see. You ain't never see a video with me without all these colors on [says excitedly]. You wanna know what's really happening with me, come on man.Q: I see you be throwing up the leg, where that come from?Fabo: I don't know. I said it in a song and I learned how to do it.Q: Who is Scotty in your song "Scotty"?Fabo: Have you ever seen Star Trek? They would have a person like them beamed up and they used to always be like "beam me up Scotty" you know. That's in the hood you ever look at New Jack City? "Scotty help me I'm gonna die", Scotty was a savior.Q: Who is on your solo project?Fabo: I got a lot of artists. I got a new single with Young Dro, Candy from Xscape, the Ying Yang Twins and the list just goes on and on.Q: Anything else to say to your fans?Fabo: Be positive and be Gik!
