Hello my name is Pete and I love VJing.
Growing up, I have always been interested in animation and video - particularly that which gets peoples attention. Initially, it was writing and seeing graphic demos on the BBC Micro and Amiga that got my imagination started.
My inspiration has come from many sources, especially the graphics and music demos on the Amiga from the 90s. For example, 'Jesus on E's' by LSD , and also 'State of the Art' and ' 9 Fingers ' by Spaceballs .
Living in the candy floss streets of Blackpool, I got my first proper taste of Vjing when I performed visuals for the council run Party in the Park in the summer of 1998, shortly before moving to Leeds.
My first international Vjing session was at Profile Intermedia 5 in Bremen, Germany in December 2002 in the workshop Databurst. Databurst was an experimental collaboration between a German based rock band and Newcastle based electronic group. This gave me a chance to work along side an international act and to chat and talk about the background of VJing to a group of people. Despite a slight language barrier this went down well. Since then I have performed visuals at various venues up and down the country, most recently for Scratch Perverts at Majestyk , Leeds.
I work with a wide range of music genres, such as electronic, techno, drum and bass, trance, rock and indie. However, my favourites remain house and dance music. This is because I find this works best with my style of visuals because they are uplifting and full of energy. My visuals also work particularly well with beat based house music as I trigger my visuals to the beat.
My set up includes two shuttle case systems, Resolume and a Panasonic MX5 video mixer. Pre-rendered video clips are mixed and triggered in time to music using one shuttle case, the other is used to punch in additional footage for sharp transitions and live camera feeds. Additionally I've got a homemade SMS text message receiver which can be used in conjunction with visuals to display messages.
All of my material has been created from scratch. I do not sample from TV or films. Most of my surreal video clips have been digitized from household objects, surroundings or rendered in 3D Studio Max .
Visuals add to the whole experience of an act. Combining visuals with audio is a very powerful medium and amplifies and enhances the atmosphere at a gig.
