About Me

I'm a community radio programmer at KAFM 88.1 in Grand Junction, Colorado. My show is variety Americana (roots rock, alt.country, blues, folk, alt.gospel, singer-songwriter, etc.). I'm on the air the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, Mountain Time. Visit the KAFM web site for our 24/7 Internet audio stream. Check out my playlists on Spinitron: Junkyard Twang

I play 100% new releases on Junkyard Twang. The goal is to expose listeners to music they haven’t heard before. I believe that to entice people to tune in to the radio in this day and age you have to give them something they can’t easily get on other stations. My audience can dial up Junkyard Twang for a few hours on Sunday afternoon and hear 30-40 different Americana artists playing their latest music. And I do not play more than one cut from an album on the same show!

A lot of time goes into each Junkyard Twang program. As a member of the KAFM Music Bureau, I language-check and review many of the roots rock, country, blues, gospel, folk, etc. albums that are sent to the station. On average, I hear about 5-7 new releases a week that eventually make their way on to my playlist. Admittedly, there’s probably twice that much new Americana out there that’s air worthy but we can only play what the labels, promoters, and artists send us.

If you're a musician with a NEW "radio-ready" CD, send us a promo copy at KAFM, 1310 Ute Ave., Grand Junction, CO 81501. FCC language warnings and printed lyrics are always appreciated. New CDs go on our control room rack for 3 months where they're available to an eclectic bunch of over 100 volunteer DJs for airplay. We are always looking for talented known and unknown acts that have a NEW professionally recorded CD.

The great majority of my MySpace Friends are musicians with albums that I have spun tracks from on-the-air. They are always welcome to post comments to my profile or email me directly. My Top Friends are all musicians with CURRENT NEW RELEASES that I strongly recommend checking out. This is the good stuff! No need to wait for the show's actual broadcast. Click on my Top Friends profiles and hear the best NEW Americana out there.

How do I get on the air at KAFM?

OK, so you've heard a little about community radio stations and how indie-friendly they are.  You're wondering if maybe you can get some air time for your own music.  What do you need to do?...

Why ALL NEW MUSIC?

I play (almost) 100% new releases on Junkyard Twang.  The main reason for this is to try and expose listeners to music they haven’t heard before.  I believe that to entice people ...

What the @$%&* is FCC CLEAN?

At KAFM, we have to flag tracks that could potentially get us in trouble with the FCC.  While it’s not clear exactly what language is prohibited, we try and use our best judgment.  Son...
