Founded in 1988, OffBeat Magazine was the brainchild of local Jan Ramsey, a native New Orleanian and music community activist who loved Louisiana music and culture, and who thought a magazine devoted to our unique music and culture was the best way to celebrate and promote it to the world.
Not long after the first issues of OffBeat hit the street, the appeal of New Orleans and Louisiana's music exploded world-wide and attained a popularity never seen in the state's history. OffBeat has covered the music and cultural scene in New Orleans and throughout the state and watched it grow and prosper into the new millennium.
Then in August 2005, everything was almost destroyed by the American tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. OffBeat ceased publication for two months--but was the first magazine to return to New Orleans after the storm, as a result of the financial support of its advertisers, constituents, and readers, many whom purchased lifetime subscriptions to the publication. OffBeat came back strong, winning several Press Club Awards that year. We’ve participated in our city and state’s rebirth as our music, cuisine and cultural resources have become the main focus of New Orleans economy in the post-Hurricane Katrina period.
OffBeat is distributed free in the New Orleans metropolitan area in coffee shops, retailers, restaurants, music clubs, universities and many more high traffic locations, including all local hotels and motels, in order to capitalize on New Orleans’ appeal as a visitor destination. OffBeat also has paid subscribers in all 50 states and 40 foreign countries, an unusual occurrence for a publication with regional focus.
Because of its association with Louisiana music and culture, OffBeat has also branched into custom production of compilation CDs and the production of special projects such as programs the French Quarter Festival, custom publications for the state of Louisiana, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, the Voodoo Music Experience and many more, plus advertising production and graphic design for clients throughout Louisiana, in the US and the world.
