Bell grew up in Huntington Woods, Michigan, which is a suburb of Detroit. Her parents, Tom Bell, a television news director, and Lorelei Bell, a registered nurse, divorced when she was two. She has two half sisters, Sara and Jody, by her father's remarriage. She likes hockey and is a big fan of the Detroit Red Wings, is an animal lover, and also a vegetarian.
She studied at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, but dropped out a few credits short of graduating to make her debut on Broadway. After working on the stage for several years, she found work in television which including several guest spots and landing the lead in two TV movies. She then got the role that would thrust her into the spotlight: "Veronica Mars". Since then, she's starred in two high profile television shows, "Gossip Girl" and "Heroes", and also starred in the movies "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Fanboys".
