Q & A with Brett Young
If I knew absolutely nothing about Brett Young, how would you describe your music to me?
Lyrically driven acoustic/soul music......I think ;)
What kind of message do you hope to send to your fans?
I always hope that the end result of every song is an opportunity for somebody who knows nothing about me, to be able to relate to me through my lyrics.
What is your goal for 2008?
I hope that more poeple hear my music in 2008 than did in 2007. I just want to make a living making music.
What do fans have to look forward to in 2008?
I hope that 2008 finds me on the radio, television, movies, and in all your CD players! ;)
What was your worst on stage experience? And your best?
Worst experience on stage was my first ever "large venue" show. I couldnt hear myself in the monitors and was so off that I had to stop mid song. Yuk, awful feeling!
Best experience was getting to play Hotel Cafe for the first time. Such an intimate venue. Everyone there comes to REALLY HEAR music. Such a treat!
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I dont know how this applies as an accomplishment, but Im really proud of my family and my relationship with them.
How long have been playing music? And how long have you known that music was you wanted to do?
I have been messin with the guitar since 8th grade, but wasnt ever really comfortable singing til about 2 years ago. I think thats when I started to persue it as a career.
We know you play guitar, but do you play any other instruments?
Im teaching myself the piano right now. Really frustrating, dont ask! ;)
Who are your main musical influences? And what inspires you most from their music?
Gavin DeGraw, Jason Reeves, James Morrison, Tyrone Wells. All these artists write Real lyrics that they sing from their SOUL!
When you are writing, do you tend to compose first or write the lyrics first?
Ive only written a lyric first one time. I wrote GO ALONE on a plane coming back from Portland. Every other tunes came about either together, or musically first.
What most inspires you in your music?
I hate to say it, but heartbreak. Pain moves you more deeply, and seems to hang on a bit longer. Love songs are great, but for every love long, there seems to be 15 songs about heartbreak around the bend.
