The Proteus

About Me

The birth of THE PROTEUS can be traced to Orbital's seminal GLASTONBURY 1994 appearance which originally inspired Ben Long to give up the office executive post and get down to his true ambition. Since then he has been building expertise in music technology, music composition and live electronic music performance. Patrick studied theatre and the performing arts plus film and video studies at college which cultivated an interest in all stage and performance related subjects. After forming his first guitar-based band (inspired by space rock maestros Hawkwind) at the age of eighteen he moved into the realms of science fiction based electronic music with his brother Ben. Early indication that there “might be something there” came with the studio re-work of their second track ever written, Stratosphere, which was released on Subconscious Records in 1996 under the name Probe. After moving through a brief time as Altéa, The Proteus (as of 1998) became the name of the band and although numerous tracks were written and many gigs played in such places as The Jester Festival, The Horn Reborn, the Pioneer Club, The Thekla club in Bristol and Cairo Jack's in Soho, nothing yet emerged on a signing front. A commission then came from T-MOBILE for a track to be used on their European radio station. Next the band increased their profile by playing such events as back to back Hawkfests, an Access To Music showcase at The Talk in Norwich and the European Creative Forum which became a regular date. The band was then selected to represent the East of England in a UK Access To Music event in De Monteford, Leicester on the strength of the previous gigs. The band were also asked to write the accompanying music to a local fireworks display the results of which sparked many creative ideas, some of which were used in upcoming projects. After a long wait THE PROTEUS finally signed to 'Inevitable Records' and since then has been working on material for a first album and especially that first single release. Projects that have been completed so far include THE PROTEUS COVER VERSION OF 'THE NATIONAL ANTHEM’ by Radiohead, which is a total reworking of the original track from Radiohead's 'Kid A'. Approved for release by Radiohead's publishing company, the band experienced a moment of inspiration after seeing their names written on the same contract as Radiohead's! However, it was subsequently decided that this track would be better for a later release so work began on the 7 Days project, comprising the original Serenity mix (on the player) and a suite of five remixes, the Electro mix being the one currently included on the player. Ali Kennan, a talented singer from Bristol, provided the lush vocals on these tracks. Most recently the band has been working on dance remixes of Kate Bush’s enduring classic ‘Wuthering Heights’. Long-time fans of Kate Bush's music, the band had first remixed Wuthering Heights five years ago for the fireworks display but had not progressed the idea. Now was seen as the perfect time to use that original spark to produce a main mix and three remixes. Of these, the UTS mix is now the choice for the first single (the radio edit of this is on the player).
YOU WILL HEAR US LIVE
There are no gigs planned as yet, but as soon as the first single is released (hopefully at the end of this summer) there will be a series of live events to promote it around the UK. Check back to this page or subscribe to BLOGS or go to 'THEPROTEUS.COM' page for 'update alerts'.
