"Debbie is an urban archaeologist. She might not call herself that, or agree with my interpretation of her work; but the meat of her photos are the remains of abandoned buildings, specifically asylums and hospitals in the northeast. What she finds are the peeling bones of institutions, the houses of enforced order that have fallen, for whatever reason, into the decay that they served to resist while in use.
Some of the places she visits were quite extravagant for their purpose, with theatres and bowling alleys and faded finery in stark contrast to the empty beds and peeling paint of the violent wards; the empty wheelchairs and broken staircases. Some are just stark, haunted by locked prison doors and mysterious toothbrushes still labeled with patient names.
Her work is a full seven-course meal for the imagination. Sometimes dark, sometimes leaving more questions than answers, but always interesting. She does do other things as well! Don’t miss them.
Take the leap!" - "Christina Atkins"
