My life is about what I believe and what I have experienced. Much of what I know as Truth has been influenced by my parent's strong faith in God. However, I have heard many people with this kind of belief say one of two things. People either say they believe in God and think they are a pretty good person, or, they say they used to do bad things, but since they found God they stopped doing those bad things. I do believe in God, but my story takes a different path.
I grew up going to church and knowing there is a God. I knew about this guy named Jesus and I knew that He died for me. But I did not understand what this meant. It was just something my parents told me and I knew I would go to heaven when I died. Later, I found out that the bad things I do, such as lying or disobeying my parents, would lead to a death lasting for eternity. It would not lead to heaven. Jesus Christ, in His great love for me, died a brutal death on a cross in order to redeem me from such punishment. Understanding what He did and proclaiming to believe Him would give me eternal life with Him, not with Death. However, the worst things I have ever done did not come until after I believed this.
A few years into my redefined lifestyle as a "Christian," I experienced the meaning of sin (those bad actions I commit). I fought off certain sins at the beginning, but after an unfortuante acquaintance I decided I was too tired to play the soldier. Instead of choosing the things God wanted for me, I decided what I wanted was more important. This led to many horrible decisions which have not only hurt me, but have also hurt others. Fortunately, God would not allow me to stay this way. He caused my friends to love me enough to show me my faults and to keep me from doing further harm. Although I could not, cannot, and will not lose the promise of heaven, there will be many physical consequences to my actions. My friends had to persevere through my stubbornness, but soon I was able to see how bad my situation really was. It was difficult to stop that way of thinking and I am far from being perfect. Consequences for those actions occur naturally, but supernaturally, through His grace, God forgives me endlessly.
I am undeserving, but I am redeemed.
