WHAT IS STAIRWELL STUDIO??
stairwell studio is a small, but (kinda) well equipped home studio that wants to make semi-quality recordings for local musicians that may not have the funds to spend time in a "real" studio.
BENEFITS TO RECORDING HERE:
-cost - we can work something out... maybe you pay me what you can... maybe i’ll record you first and then you pay me what you think it was worth... maybe you don’t want to pay anything but i think your music is "super cool" so i decide to do it for free... whatever. we’ll work it out. (HOWEVER, I DO WANT TO HEAR YOUR MUSIC BEFORE WE SCHEDULE OR AGREE ON ANYTHING. if nothing else, set up a boombox during practice and bring me the tape.) just don’t mess me up... if you think the recording is great, i probably will too. if you pay me with a pizza, i’ll remember that the next time you want to record with me.
-time/flexibility - i have a full-time day job and i am usually home by 5 pm. at this point i only record people once every week or two so there are plenty of open time slots (weekends are usually open all day). at the same time, since i don’t have a lot on my table at the moment, you can pretty much feel free to spend as much time as you want instead of feeling rushed like you would at a "real" studio.
-freedom - i like wierd stuff... period. you can feel free to make your music sound the way that YOU want it too as long as you don’t say "i want to sound exactly like "insert radio band here." that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a straight forward recording. just be open to my ideas. i like to experiment (which is big reason for me to record other people in the first place). you may hate something that i do to your sound, in which case, i’ll gladly fix it back. it’s your music, not mine (NOTE: I STARTED RECORDING IN THE FIRST PLACE BECAUSE I WAS UNHAPPY WITH THE WAY SOME PEOPLE DECIDED THAT MY MUSIC SHOULD SOUND. I WILL NOT ARGUE OR FORCE MY IDEAS ON YOUR MUSIC.)
-atmosphere - look this is a home studio in an apartment, not some fancy studio in an office building. it’s like hanging out at a friend’s house.
-semi-quality - i do the best i can. SEE "PEOPLE I’VE RECORDED" BELOW FOR SAMPLES
DRAWBACKS TO RECORDING HERE:
-it’s in an apartment - i have neighbors. for the most part, we can record whatever you want during the afternoon and early evening. late at night we have to be somewhat respectful of my neighbors. crazy loud instruments just won’t work late (we’ll just record them in the afternoon). however, i should probably point out that an electric guitar doesn’t need to be cranked way up to get a good recording. DRUMS ARE AN ISSUE. drums are the only instrument that i have found to be a problem at any point during the day. HOWEVER, SOME OF MY EQUIPMENT IS MOBILE AND CAN BE TRANSPORTED TO A DIFFERENT LOCATION FOR RECORDING
-semi-quality - funny how this can be a benefit and a drawback. i am currently purchasing new equipment to add to what i already have. however, i don’t have everything. as i said before, i do the best i can. (if you have specific equipment concerns just shoot me a message)
PEOPLE I’VE WORKED WITH...
matt french - he records a lot of stuff on his own, but i work with him a lot.
awakebeyondknowing - he trusts me to almost all of his recordings.
instant jones - i recorded a practice of their’s and later they decided to schedule time to actually record. two weeks later, i’m working on mixes. everything (including the drums which were tracked in a garage) sounds great. samples will be available soon.
baby mice - matt french plus awakebeyondknowing equals baby mice... it only makes since that they would record with me. by the way... you should probably listen to their songs for example of the recording freedom that you can have rather than crystal clear recording. those guys are weird and they like noise and sometimes choose to use not so traditional eq settings.
